I don't think anyone is arguing against taking in refugees. Maybe I'm wrong but I wish the timeline was a little longer even if the amount was higher. Why not 50k refugees over the next year? Honestly I'd feel safer about that over the rush job that I perceive to be happening right now.

Wait for Turkey to down a few more Russian jets. Then go hide in your bomb shelter for a few years and you can LIVE Fallout :).

Yeah I get that. Sometimes I guess we just have to do something we don't really want at a pace that's far too fast because the need is there. Hopefully everything will go over without reprocussions.

BTW I heard today that the refugees get free health, dental, and prescription care as well as $2500/month in living expenses... Damn, no wonder the cost is so high.

Yeah I get it. Even within my own head I know that. I guess in a way though I'm just as worried as everyone else about where the situation in the middle east is heading. The deployment of the US army or the use of a WMD by the USA at some point is not totally out of the question... Damn.

My comment was that Alberta's plan to take on climate change is a farce to cover up a need for a PST. It was not directed at the article you posted below your comment.

And now I've read it. Mostly fluff. Yes, with the regime changes and popular attitudes it's time for the oil companies to put as much PR spin as they can on anything even remotely positive, like the new carbon tax in Alberta.

I wouldn't mind the 10% energy cost increase if the cost was passed on to the companies producing the carbon instead of people just trying to keep their houses warm. I know a guy who has to drive 2 hours, round trip, to visit his kids on the weekend. He makes about $17/hour working a dead end job. Poor life choices? Maybe. At least he contributes to society and honestly, between his volunteer work and time with his new family, I'd call him a great human being. Too bad it will now cost him even more money that he does have to visit his kids... Thanks Notley. Really following though on those promises to help struggling Albertans.

Heck, I'd even be okay if the new tax was rolled into renewable energy incentives like solar and geothermal lease tax breaks... but those kind of tax breaks wouldn't help the unions like letting big oil pass the cost on to the consumer.

I count carpet bombing, thermobaric weapons, and commercialized terror squads (Private Security) as weapons of mass destruction. My definition doesn't just stick to the antiquated chemical, biological, and nuclear options that have been beat into our heads as the worse weapons out there. The things I just mentioned, they do just as much damage as any nuke would, and in some cases more. I guarantee the USA uses all three of those things if a major terrorist attack on US soil happens and can be traced back to ISIS. If ISIS used a nuke somehow, which is extremely unlikely... well I hope you're right and at least one of the people confirming the order has his head screwed on right.

The poll was that Canadians would accept a 10% increase in utility costs in order to get an international agreement to reduce GHG emmissions , not sure where you're going with the rest of that

    Good article

I agree with the Overall Assessment :

"We must be careful to separate carbon taxes as a tool to efficiently incentivize emissions reductions, on the one hand, from what governments choose to do with the money, on the other. One may take issue with the lack of real revenue neutrality in Alberta’s carbon tax, but the response should be in calling for tax reductions elsewhere. (Given Alberta’s fiscal situation, this also means calling for spending restraint, of course.) Putting the revenue neutrality issue aside, a carbon tax is a huge win for Alberta households and businesses alike. Any other policy to lower emissions would have needless costs for our economy."

Okay, let's ignore that the tax is unfairly placed on the consumers during a recession. Squeezing blood from a stone is good for Albertan households and businesses under the guise of environmental responsibility.
