I didn't find it to be a story out of nothing. I'm actually surprised the CBC wrote this piece. Maybe the CBC is planning on staying more neutral than they have during the last two governments. Either way, it'll be interesting to see if the PM does anything differently after this article.

 

I was just about to say , its obvious the CBC wants the Conservatives to get back in power , they wrote a story about the current PM

 

PS , the line in that story under the one you quoted says he does intend to donate that money to charity

 

LOL yeah.

Trust me I never believed that the CBC was extremely biased, but they did seem a little slanted ever since their budget was cut. Hopefully someone has made some changes to get rid of that slant. If we all pay for it, then they should play from both sides of the field.

 

Yup. I said that too a couple of posts back. My comment was that if he is getting money for his nannies, which isn't strange as a PM but is a bit contradictory to the spirit of what he is doing, he should chip into charities the cost of the nannies too. He could just not accept the money for nannies too, but I think that would be complicated.

 

I think they critique the government in power , whoever that happens to be

Lots of talk about blocking off highways now too. TIn all reality if the bill goes through in it's current wording farm workers will work less hours and more people will be hired to reduce O/T. In other words, more workers will be hired but for lower wages and hours which will not be sustainable. Wages would likely drop to around $15/hour, where most farms pay far more than that right now for good help, to limit the impact of any overtime. Sad. Another piece of poorly thought out knee jerk legislation that will hurt families, the economy, and government coffers...

Another possible outcome could be the loss of even more family farms due to extreme costs to comply with OHS rules... a few farms have already priced out switching electrical to factory style standards and the costs are well into the 6 digits... and that's only one thing that those rules would mandate as mandatory.

I did hear later today that the NDP is considering pushing back the next reading and actually listen to farmers to come up with a more viable piece of legislation. If they do that, I think everyone could be happy with legislation more in line with what other provinces have that protects the worker and doesn't hurt the farm nearly as bad financially.

I would have assumed workers would already have to be covered by workers comp . I have to cover my book keeper at my construction rate

 

Crazy eh, my dad used to complain about the cost of WCB, and EI, and as the working owner, there were limitations on what he could claim, should he need its services.

 

Most farms already voluntarily cover their workers via WCB or private insurance. That's not the issue. Overtime and the OHS enforcement are where this law has issues. Let's just go with Alberta is the only province trying to force the same rules on agriculture as everyone else without considering the unique hours of calving, harvest, etc. This law would also be broad enough to introduce the challenges of code compliance for smaller operations in regards to things like bins, heavy equipment, trucking hours, etc. No province or state has tried to pass legislation on the farm to this level and the consequences of the bill, if passed, would basically eliminate the smaller family farms in favor of large corperate farms. That is not good for anyone.

 

Thanks for the likes guys. I know this sounds funny but right now it's hard to get the support of the urban population because they've never experienced farming.

The energy minister seems to be unaware that many of those laid off workers are from BC.

 

Yeah. This is a rookie government with plenty of rookie members and they are showing it unfortunately.

 

I read a report yesterday that oil and gas workers only make up 5% (IIRC) of Albertas economy and construction is the biggest driver
