Looks good! That rack over the shell is an interesting concept. Did you build it yourself? How is it held on?

 

That rack is/was a very common rack used on many Hilux trucks. I had it on both my 84 and 92 extended cab Toyota's and I could keep the rack on with or without the canopy. I saw it also installed on 1st gen 4-runners where the top came off just behind the drivers cabin. Still see a few around Whitehorse. I paid 200 for mine if memory serves me..............20 years ago.
Pretty sure they were BC build and bolt together but very tough. Because they use a a 4 inch wide aluminum plate on the bottom surface I was able to bolt both rack and canopy from those second/third gen toys and fit it onto the second gen Tacoma without the price tag of the new ones. reuse, recycle etc. They would have fit first gen too. I can remove the carrier in 5 minutes but usually toss my spare up there when serious off-roading in mud.
Wont pass the mall crawler crowd, but its all very functional. Best I can do till the kids move away.

BTW, is that the hill going down to Whitehorse? I remember that being gravel when I was a kid.

 

That is the road down to the new Whistlebend subdivision.
There are 2 that you are remenbering, now called 2 Mile Hill and Robert Service way (or South Access) . Both connect the downtown core up to the Alaska Highway. They have been paved for longer than I have been here. (35 Years)
