Sounds like the recent group acting in Belgium is directly linked to the group that attacked Paris

Yeah, and I'm guessing there were no coincidences that this attack happened right after they caught the prime suspect they were looking for in those previous attacks. This was probably a bit of retaliation mixed with some distraction and strategic fast planning in case the authorities learned too much from said individual.

Yeah. I made that joke above thinking he'd come right in here. It was only tonight when I realized he hadn't been here for that long.

Okay, a bit of a rant here but I have to vent.

So parents I don't know if you've heard about the new child tax benefits but I'm pretty pissed off about them as a member of a set of working parents making a middle income household salary.

The problem I have with this new payment, yes it's a payment not a tax break, is that someone on welfare with 5 kids will now effectively make over 45K a year tax free just straight off from welfare and the child tax break from my understanding. They will also qualify for free subsidized childcare and free subsidized housing. If you work it out it's the equivalent of them having a 90K single income level. I'm not okay with that. What incentive is there then for a single parent to do anything productive? How does this make parents who make a fair income feel when they will have to limit the time spent with their kids to pay for others to have every single hour with their kids making a similar amount of money off of the government? This could be viewed an incentive to have as many babies as you want, quit your job, and reap the same benefits as someone who is making an average income...

This isn't the first time a government has tried this system. England had it for a decade. They scrubbed it once it spiraled out of control for the reasons above and began to hurt productivity and the economy when single moms, and dads, figured out they could just go on welfare and pop out kids to make a living. England now limits the payout to the first two kids. I wonder why the Liberals couldn't take a page from overseas and learn from someones mistakes before following the same path?

As a person with no kids I think I should get a couple thousand bucks a month for not adding to the strain in our system

Sweet. So when you retire you don't plan on drawing anything from the system. No Healthcare, tax breaks, etc etc.

My child will pay for your healthcare at some point. It's fair and I'm not saying anything against the way the system works. What I am saying though is that the child tax benefits are there to encourage people to have at least enough kids to replace the population we have so that, together with immigration, we can have a system that works economically in the future so people in the future can receive the same or better benefits when they retire.

However, if we just give people a reason to live on welfare rather than work and pop out 5 kids then what kind of kids do you think will be running the country when we are retired? I would suspect it's the kind that expect the same free ride their parents received, and that's why the UK had to amend their system. It was getting out of control. Too bad Justin decided not to heed the learnings of another country that went down this path.

That's the liberals spin. Look at it this way. A single parent household in Canada gets a base welfare payout of an average ~15K no matter what.

    http://www.ccsd.ca/factsheets/fs_ncwpl01.htm

Then if someone has 5 kids, they will get 5 x $6400 tax free under the Liberal plan. So that's another 32K. So now we are at $47K income TAX FREE. That's the equivalent of making over $60K without lifting a finger as a single parent if you pop out enough babies.

Wait, I know what you're going to say next :D, I forgot about daycare and living expenses. That's the best part! The money received from the new child tax benefit and welfare is NOT counted the same as income in the subsidized housing and subsidized daycare calculation.

You want to guess what someone with 5 kids and no calculable income gets for subsidies for housing and daycare? You guessed it! 100%!

So let's say they get subsidized government housing in Calgary where the average rent is $1200/month. Tag on that each kids daycare would cost normal people about 1K a month per child. Over a year with 5 kids that adds up to 74.4K in additional living expenses and daycare covered FOR FREE.

So even my first estimate was low. A 5 child single mom could be making a net $122K, or even better over $160K if you related it back to what a normal household would have to make to cover those benefits...

In the UK they limit the benefits to the first two kids now to stop this runaway system and they count the benefits as taxable once they add up to more than the average income for any given year. Without those limits, Justin has formed a system where my wife may as well declare that she can't work because of her stress, divorce me, and live a comfortable life with 5 kids that she only has to take care of on weekends.

I'm not sure its a spin , I thought that by the way you had reacted to it this was a brand new thing , as in there was no benefit to low income earners previously

So the biggest difference here OZ is the way that the child tax benefit calculates for everything else. Under Harper the benefit was taxable, so even if you claimed 30K worth of benefits you had to pay the tax on it... plus it factored into the calculation for subsidized housing and daycare. Now that it's not taxable income it's just free money which allows for abuses of the system all the way through.
