Finally someone in the media gets it.

On another note, anyone else think Rex Murphy is starting to look like the Crypt Keeper from when we were kids?

Why is main stream media, McClains and CBC come to mind, so anti celebratory for the 150 year celebrations? I mean I totally get it that Canada isn't some perfect utopia but I don't think we should be doing 1,000 Hail Mary's just because we have the same problems that the rest of the first world is facing. It's pretty neat to think that 150 years ago the act that created the Dominion was signed and it's a great opportunity to come together and celebrate that as a country. I mean, hey, Quebec has stayed with us for 150 years! I don't feel like it needs to be pooped on by stale, repeated, and front page opinion pieces about the same systemic issues indigenous peoples are suffering though that will likely never disappear or pointing out that Canada day could fall on three different days depending on what you consider nationhood, just to name two articles sweeping the FB and interwebz. Canada day is about enjoying being a Canadian even if you're in a shitty situation. Free food and a party are provided jn almost every town to everyone. It's sad the media wants to turn it into a day of grieving instead of the party we Canadians deserve.

I wonder if it will be a snap election. Not sure I'd trust an NDP/Green alliance to last. All they need is one dissenter and someone to miss a session, game over.

They didn't just jack the tariff. They made sure the payment for the tariff isn't until the end of the year. That way the earliest Canada can sue the USA in the WTO is over a year from now once we actually know what these companies paid to the dollar.

This also leaves room for Trump to try and get Ottawa to sign off on some tariffs in the mean time. If Trump succeeds than no lawsuits and he looks amazing to his supporters. That's his game plan clearly.

To be completely honest I'm ashamed our townies still won't call it a hate crime. I went to the flag raising yesterday to show my support for that group. Whether or not I, or anyone else, agree with their life choices has nothing to do with their right to feel safe to exercise their right to free speech. If someone took the time to drive over there with enough gasoline to burn up a steel flagpole it was premeditated and therefore a hate crime. It's not a couple of drunks or misguided kids stealing anymore, and that scares the shit out of me. It's a pretty thin line between burning flags and burning people or other property for someone that twisted.

Is the flag staying up year round or just for the month? Why did the mayor step down recently? It seems you agree with the lifestyle or are homophobic. I have no problem with the lifestyle. Hell do what you want with whoever you'd like. Burning the flag is bad but forcing it down the throats of some old school highly religious people is a bit much. Not that the religious people are the ones doing the burning but when is it a slap to the face of people who don't agree with it. ( like I said I don't fall into that category, do what you want just don't expect agreement from everybody).

I believe it's just up for the month but at this point as a statement it should go up for longer.

The mayor stepped down because he's a jackass that got called out for trying to bully other towns and villages in the MD into sticking with the town for fire services. The Mayor of Barnwell wrote a long letter to the paper that was published in full. The letter basically outlined the series of events that proved the Mayor was causing problems that shouldn't exist. After all the rumors around him being a tyrant in the administration office it was enough for him to suffer another mental break and quit. It's not a loss, I have nothing against the guy but he did dig his own grave.

Hmm, I think you'd be surprised who did this. I have no doubt it's a church goer, probably one from a local ward who thinks he did gods work. Next step he'll start killing "fags" and then maybe it'll wake people up in this podunk town that the vitriol pushed by the extremists in their homes and places of gathering is causing unnecessary violence and hate.

Since 1982 people have a legal right to the protection and safety of that choice. They also have a right to have their property protected when it is legally displayed on public property. Defacing said property is a hate crime under the charter.

I thought old Hank stepped down because of the whole pride thing. Don't read the paper and I'm not a face Booker anymore so I'm way behind lol.
I think some young punks did it. But I agree it's a hate crime. Are you saying you know who it was? Pm me if you do lol.

That would be insulting to me if I didn't have thick skin unlike 95% of the world now a days. I grew up here with people on both sides. As far as I know besides this flag crap there has not been any violence or hate in this town towards the LGBTQ community. I know a couple members from town and will certainly ask next time I see them.
All I'm trying to say is that no amount of flags and parades are going to change the minds of people who were raised strict Catholic / religious and where educated on such topics by the grandpa's grandmas aunts and uncles, hell moms and dads that cussed every second word and were / are still against it.

I only know what happened because I sat in the legion one night listening to a bunch of old guys talk about it, one of them even read the letter out of the paper lol.

No I don't lol. If I did I would of turned them in.
I chose my words very carefully there. I don't think this is strictly a religion or political problem. However when mom and dad, for whatever reason, give their kids the perception one group is less human than another and not entitled to the same rights and protections as they are that's when things like a flag burning happen.

I grew up here as well and the two openly gay kids in our grad class took a lot of hate from everyone, not just the religious folks. I remember one incident where someone was actually voted out of a project by a certain group of individuals over their sexual orientation. It wasn't right and back then stepping up for them would of resulted in a beating. I should of done it anyways, I was a scrapper in highschool, but the past is the past. From the kids I've worked with in hockey the situation is still the same. Kids who are different get picked on, I get that some of that is just kids being kids, but at some point someone has to step in and enforce that treating human beings as less than human beings isn't right on any level.

I totally agree that nothing will change the older generation. However, there is always hope for the younger generation. I think the good sized crowd yesterday at the flag raising proved that.

@def67 For whatever it's worth I have been married to a Catholic in the past and was raised Christian as well. My parents were from Ontario though and taught a more open perspective than I've experienced here. I think, over time, Alberta will change like Ontario did. Just a thought. My intention wasn't to offend you, it's all speculation on who burned the flag until they find the person who did it. I think the townies are hoping that whoever did it will tell someone and get handed in. I'm sure whoever it was is feeling some pressure right now.

No offence taken. We're red necked for sure and some things red neck I can be proud of, certainly not this. Talking about it like this is how people can change. I absolutely used racist and homophobic slurs growing up because that was the norm and then I fit in. Outsiders usually where the ones getting bullied and I even recall sticking my neck out for one or two. Pride parades and more LGBTQ people in movies and just being more visable has changed my outlook ( so to speak not sure that will sound like I'd like it to). When I was in school here nobody came out because they would have been tormented for sure. One of my best friend didn't come out till he moved away to Calgary and even there I'm sure he faced some shit about it. You're generation was the first here to have openly gay students. As the old people die off this hopefully won't be an issue anymore.
