I'd do the smartphone thing. I hate keys and an extra FOB would suck!

Lol I forgot, with your fancy automatic you have to carry the toyota fob around anyways :p I'm hoping to help them unwrap mine on Thursday or Friday, but the darn 6mt still comes with an ignition key :(

The FOB never has to leave my pocket though! So an app to start the truck would be great.

Do any of you have recommendations or experiences with these addons?

Extended warranty: thinking of 60 months/100,000km for approx $2100 - apparently for 2016 it includes all services for the first 3 years

Diamondkote protection: gold package - undercoat, rust inhibitor, paint protection, seat protection, and 5 year tire warranty for approx $1700.

I have bought these to various degrees on my last three vehicles, but havent really made use of them. Experiences on here seem to be varied as well. Any experience or thoughts on any of these would be greatly appreciated. I talk to the finance department tomorrow to finalize the deal.

@K Mac, my wife is from Saskatchewan and she said you're gonna get beat up for buying a Tacoma! Haha

She brought over the F150 I just destroyed and now we're going with the Tacoma as well. When we looked at them she literally said "I had no idea Toyota even made trucks!" It's either Ford or Chevy in Sask.

Of course she's also amazed that vehicles aren't sold with block heaters here as well. :D

Only thing I suggest is GAP insurance, didn't purchase any of the other offered stuff, researched it all well though. I will be spending $150 on Krown protection though.

Haha so true! I already get harassed about my 2012! (Not a real truck, costs as much as fullsize, same fuel efficiency as fullsize, etc, blah blah blah). But between work, family, and friends, I've driven all the current full sized trucks, (150(0) thru 350(0) series') and I still have no desire to own any of them.

You reminded me of how many tacomas I saw when I was out in BC last summer, I never really noticed when I lived there! I was also surprised how many had truck caps, I mostly see tonneau covers in these parts.

I have never purchased an Extended Warranty and never will, I have been told by someone in the Automotive Sector that the Toyota Canada Plan is administered by a third party and is expensive and about the worst to deal with, save your money, don't forget this only kicks in after the Factory Warranty runs out in what, 3 years?

On the Rust Protection, Undercoat, Etc, do not get them from the dealership! If you think you need them buy them after from a local business in your area at considerable savings to yourself. I have only ever had the undercoat applied. Most Dealerships farm this out, probably to the same place you can go yourself at huge savings.

These add-ons are where the Dealership recovers any savings they gave to you in order to close the deal and/or if you didn't beat them down on price then this is gravy on top of the gravy!!!

Ugh. You caught me there. At least toyota's warranty appears to be cheaper than the others I've dealt with, but still, $2000 to add two years of bumper to bumper? That's not even powertrain! I might see if the 3 year service plan is included in the cheapest $1500 48 month plan, because I think that might almost add up to $1500 or more. Something to consider I guess.

Thanks for the info on the diamondkote, I have to agree there - the truck comes with a coating, and the seats have stain protection built in. You're also right about the local options likely being better/cheaper (plus I could get off my ass and do some of this myself).

put diamond kote on in 1987 on my Toyota, well if you remember right the beds rusted in the seams and guess what diamond kote wouldn't stand behind the claim, ok so I didn't learn my lesson, bought new taco in 97, had diamond kote again, put on real bad when I looked under, went back to dealer they literally took the Canadian tire spray stuff and touched it up..grrrr, well I still got the truck, brought it in for yearly inspection and in 2013, had a new guy inspecting and said the stuff they spray in the hood etc, needs to be redone, all of a sudden dealership didn't do it couldnt' do it 2 days later and a few calls to different mangers/ owner too, got it all reapplied, and they scotch guard with the spray bombs from the store too, don't do it!

    Hey,
I can give you some feedback. I almost always lease. My Tundra is leased at 0.9%. I like leasing because I always chose vehicles with high residual and low interest rates. I have low payments and use the extra money I would have paid to finance to invest somewhere else or pay down other debt. Why I also like leasing is you have way more options with a lease in my opinion. If you get into an accident you can return the lease at the end of the term and not worry about resale like you would if you financed the vehicle. You can have someone take over a lease early and only thing you pay is lease transfer fee if you can find someone willing to take it over. I've done this couple times. You can sell it any time you want and pay it off at that time. Your buyout is always known. There are no hidden fees or issues. The only way you see penalties is if you return the lease at the end and vehicle needs work. IMO, that's not different than a financed truck going up for sale that needs work. You either fix it or drop the price to account for it.

You never return a Tacoma. They always have higher retail value vs buyout. Another good example is Subaru in Canada. I just sold a leased Forester and pocketed $5500 after paying the buyout amount. Basically if you do your research and pick a good rate, high residual leasing can work great and is no different than financing, you're just structuring your payments differently.
Let me know what dealer you work with and how it goes.

Trying to finalize my purchase here in Calgary...under the gun seeing my truck is sold 2 days ago!! One issue that seems to keep coming up is accessories...or the lack there of. We have all heard about the installed tonneau covers in the states...anyone have experience in Canada with one? One dealer told me there are none available?! This same dealer told me the leveling kits currently on market may not align perfect with the 2016's.. Last bad news given to me was...the truck I built online would take over a month to order in...sounds like bulls%$# to me.

That is the initial "con" of a new model. Limited availability of accessories both factory and aftermarket. You will have to be patient and I would recommend waiting for aftermarket. Other than the oem bed mat and maybe A couple other accessories, I prefer the aftermarket gear. I have found that you can get better quality for less money.

It was at Country Hills, on a barcelona red sport premium package automatic.

Funny story though, on my way to Cochrane to potentially purchase the truck with my already sold 2012 tacoma, I was rear-ended by an old man…whiplash, busted back window from the tonneau cover jamming into it…smashed bumper…lost my used sale (no surprise), and now stuck going through claims, what are the freakin chances!
