Holy! Those prices are crazy for a new cap! And here is me, bought this shell for a $100 on Monday. Some sanding and painting over the next month and it should be good as new.

Yes, it used to be on a 5lug 6ft tacoma.
Although I had to drive 2 hours up north from Toronto to get it.

Congrats on your buy Eugene! That's a great price. I would have preferred a used one, but that's the problem of getting a first year vehicle, there is no used stuff out there. Would have been a long wait.

Did you look at soft tops at all? They're under a grand I think and would probably do the trick until there's a decent used market.... then sell the soft topper when you find a good deal. I'm cheap like that though.

Yeah, I thought about a softie, but I have to carry some work-related gear in the truck. Nothing crazy expensive, but I want to minimize the risk of it "walking away", and with a hard shell it seems a little more protected. The way it looks now, that shell will never come off the truck anyway. Short bed is too short for a snowmobile or ATV, so things like that go on the trailer.

I actually did consider SUVs instead of the Taco, but Taco won by default - 6 speed MT. And towing capacity is better than any SUV that I looked at. Hence, the bed gets enclosed by a more or less permanent hard shell.

Those are way better prices then I was getting quoted out here in BC for the same caps, mind you they were for a long box instead of a short box, but still the price difference alone has thinking I need to shop in another province more often. Must call the AB dealers for ARE/Snugtop.

Today, I saw a guy with a orange 2016 long bed Taco with a cap on it. He claimed that his bare-bones Leer cap cost him less than 2K. He couldn't remember the exact price, but he said 1600 or 1800 or something.

Wow, now that's impressive if he got it for that price! Hope I can find a deal in that price range.

I have the Leer 100XL on mine. Picked it up in 2011 for $2,500 and haven't removed it since. Still works just fine. I also had the power lock installed and wired in to the door locks. I like it because of the low profile look. I never was a fan of the big handles on the rear door. The only issue I've had was a fuse for the power lock blew within the first 3 months. The dealer replaced the fuse with no questions and it's been fine since then. There's some pics in my gallery.

Just purchased a A.R.E. CX Canopy here in Edmonton at Canopy West. For a 2011 DCLB. Options I got were Side Windoors, 12V LED Dome Light, Fabric Headliner, Paint Matched to Alpine White. Total price including install and tax is $2,572.50. Will post pics when it is all installed.

That is a great price! Congrats! Curious why you chose ARE over the others?

I really liked the looks of them on all the Canopy Threads in the forums. I was stuck between the X series and the CX series. Went with the CX as it was about $300-400 cheaper. Looks the same and not many people had pictures of the X series on the Taco. Also the brochure for the ARE canopies looks pretty good for the Toyota Models. Lots of graphics and informative. So I may have had tunnel vision towards the ARE's but they just lookednice and it was easy to get quotes directly from thier website.

Yeah, I ordered an Action branded (but supposedly made by ARE) cap, because it had the OTR coating. But I will end up paying over 4K. Maybe I should have haggled with them more?

I didn't do any haggling. I just filled out the requests on the ARE site a couple times selecting the different suppliers in my area. Maybe the OTR coating is really expensive as you can get that on the ARE caps also. Do you have a link for the Action Branded Canopy?

Action Car & Truck Accessories and I received your inquiry regarding A.R.E. Thanks for your interest in our premier line of caps and tonneau covers!

The ARE CX series unit runs $2470.00, the X series unit runs $2850.00, the front tilt window runs $92.00, the roof tracks run $241.00, and the windoors run $172.00 per side. Install on this unit would be $175.00. I do have a CX and a X series unit in stock with regular side windows if you wanted to come in and see one in person. We also offer Air Miles and have a price match guarantee. We also provide in house financing oac if interested.

You are making a smart choice in considering the A.R.E. Brand. A.R.E. Has been in business for over forty years, and my personal experience with their product has been excellent. I don't have a link to Action. Their website doesn't have too much specific info, ARE website is where I got most of my info from. I only found out about Action caps after I went into the store. I have a detailed quote listed earlier in this thread.
