I hate to say this, but the First gen PreRunners are all automatics. If he wants a manual, he's gettin the 4x4. :)

Nope. BUT, he can do a tranny swap. Going from an auto to a manual is an easy swap an the first gens.

4x4 is nice if you can afford it. I wish I had waited on a 4x4 exactly like what I got, but I'm still happy as hell with my Prerunner. It seems to have no problem hanging with my buddies YJ off road..

Get the 4wd and get the V6! You'll regret it later if you don't... I wanted a 5-speed, but had to get an auto b/c I wanted the DoubleCab more. I love it! Also, the fuel mileage you'll save won't be worth the the lack of power you get with the 4cyl, or the lack of off-road ability you'll get with a Prerunner. Think about the $200 tow bill you'll pay the first time you bury it in the sand or in a ditch... That's several tanks of gas! I personally don't understand the point of a lifted 2 wheel drive truck either. Just my opinion. Also, the 3.4 vs 2.7: Do a search and see how many people are looking for more power out of their truck, I have a 3.4 and still am looking for ways to gain that extra hp! Gas is getting cheaper anyways. Think about it, you're gonna spend $10,000+ on the truck anyways, spend a little extra and get the best! One last point (sorry, I'm rambling) the resale value is way more on the 4wd V6 models. You'll make your money back in the long run.
Take your time and don't rush your decission. I looked for almost 5 months before I found the exact truck I wanted, and I got a great deal! I bought my '01 Limited Double Cab 4wd four years ago for $16,000 w/ 40K miles on it. I luckily stumbled on to a great deal! Buying a truck is a big investment, so take your time and get what you want the first time so you don't regret it later.

This is our 5th Toyota truck & I would recomend 4X4. Plus, you might consider looking at a 2nd Generation (05 & up) cause we have noticed our new 2nd generation is getting even better gas milage than our 1st gen 4x4 did. We got an amazing 23 mpg highway & @ 17 in town....
