Can't figure out if my rear diff is LSD or open, any help?

It's a 2007 Tacoma V6 4.0l prerunner 2wd. the door sticker is a04a/a750e. The diff only has one sticker on it, C3 052 07307 0582 SKY. there is no limited slip sticker, but it's an old truck and may have come off. Driving in the sand is sure doesn't feel like it has limited slip but that may be because I didn't use an lsd additive in the oil.

Only sport models had it, and you'd see an LSD sticker. So no hood scoop, no LSD.

Additive actually makes it slip, without it, the LSD actually locks up too much and binds.

 

oooh i see. Thanks. so just use regular 75w90 gear oil.

 

It's too bad, the LSD was only for a few years and it kicks butt on tacoma. Wish they made it more available. Sand would be rough with one tire spinning.

 

stick your finger in the fluid. if you start trippin' after a couple hours you got LSD

Doesn't TRAC act like a computer replacement for a physical LSD? Something about it using the rear brakes to ensure that both drive wheels spin under slip.

 

Got any buttons on your dash, left hand side of the wheel?

Pretty sure this is incorrect

 

LSD additive is a friction modifier, designed to allow the clutch packs to slip.

Without it, or the correct oil, the clutch pack grabs and binds. Usually what happens is the shop will change it with regular oil and the customer will complain of hoping around turns.

 

The 2007 Tacoma Sport came with a LSD. If your truck is a 2007 and is a sport model it has a LSD.

 

no buttons for diff locker, no.

 

it's not a sport model, just an SR5 prerunner 2wd.

 

Just an update to my earlier post regarding LSD.

For 2005-2008 you could only get a LSD in the TRD Sport Tacoma's. From 2009-2015 every Tacoma came standard with an Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD).

@Nastysoda Chock the fronts, and lift the back up so both wheels off the ground. Put the truck in neutral, and turn one wheel by hand. If the wheel on the other side turns the same direction it has a mechanical LSD, but if it turns the opposite way it's an open diff.

Also, pretty sure it'd be on a dealer/Toyota VIN report.

 

Then no limited slip

 

Even if you did have a locker or not there would still be a button over there with a truck with a little swervy marks that would be your traction and LSD controller.

 

the NHTSA vin decoder should tell you. or you could just backup and turn and see if you feel any chatter.

I have a 2007 4X4 SR5 with LSD.
The only real way to know is to physically check.
