My bad on getting back to you late. The valve is designed to prevent liquid flow out of the tank but should allow air out (and in I think). I have would disconnect the hose that leads from that valve to the filler neck. Try moving air in and out of the tank via the hose and see if that valve lets you do that. You might be able to hear a check ball or a diaphram moving if it’s working.

Here is the valve on top of the tank on my 04 with the bed pulled for reference:

No worries at all, thanks for getting back to me. So this actually reminded me to update this thread:

    - So I ordered the check valve, the charcoal canister and some assorted parts related to fuel pump replacement (figured if I'm going to pull the bed, it's probably time to replace the original fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit with 290k miles on them).

    - Parts arrived yesterday.

    - Interestingly I decided to try refueling the truck again on Sunday, and pulled the nozzle way back (barely inserted into the fuel filler tube). Truck took ~7 gallons, which puts the truck right around a full tank per my mental math and according to my less than reliable fuel gauge.

So as it stands I plan to keep the charcoal canister and roller valve on the shelf for now (along with the fuel pump components), and wait for this problem to recur. If I still daily'd the truck, and wasn't tied up with other projects, I'd probably fix it proactively now. If I had to guess I got lucky Sunday, and this issue will recur soon. I'll update this thread with what develops next.

I wouldn't. You have the parts. Just replace them.

I did that same thing, not putting the nozzle all the way it or even sometimes holding it at odd angles helped, for about 2-3 years. Then eventually I couldn't do anything but trickle gas in with it like half way down. It sucked.

It will happen again and continue to get worse over time.

yeah the good news is it doesn't need to happen immediately. But I would still do it sooner than later.

I have a friend who owes me some labor after helping him renovate his rental property, so I'll call in that favor and have a great excuse to day drink on the weekend. Win-win

Ok I'll be sure to follow-up. Just an FYI, I helped swap a bed from a 5-lug at the pick and pull onto a 6-lug my friend bought and neither bumper needed to come off either truck

You will not have to remove the bumper. Just the wiring for the tail lights

In replying to another new thread about this issue, I realize I never updated this thread. I did end up pulling the bed and replacing the fuel pump, fuel sending unit, check valve and charcoal cannister (all OEM parts). Also added a new OEM fuel cap for good measure. It's been about a year now, and I've had no issues filling the truck with fuel, no hissing when removing the cap and no fuel smell when driving (had all of those symptoms previously).

Curious if this is just a problem for the later first gens with the charcoal canister under the bed, ever an issue with the earlier models with the canister under the hood? Maybe not as common because the canister is elevated?

Any explanation for the buzzing that can be heard coming from the evap canister under the hood? Had a 97 that would periodically make a buzzing noise, typically when warm out, curious what would cause that
