So it lets the excess fuel and fumes dissipate?

Kind of. The idea is it absorbs the excess fumes so they aren't dispersed into the atmosphere. It's primary function is emission control.

OOooooo I get it!! Huh. Do all cars have this? I can't believe I never heard of this before.

But how would that affect him not being able to put gas in the truck?

I am not sure if it would affect his problem, unless the vent tube is clogged, and its creating a vacuum so no gas is going in. Doubt that though.

And yes, all modern cars have sometype of evap/charcoal emissions system. Although I dont know how much help they are to the environment. Just think of all the gas cans being stored in garages and sheds that vent vapor.

Just another thing that can trip a CEL...

With 250,000 miles on your truck, if this is your only issue then you should be good. Drive it to the dealership with the little bit of gas you do have and get the 2012 Tacoma TX!!

If you are they type that fills the tube up completely, then there is the potential to fill the cannister.........at least those that are mounted by the gas tank (like yours). Filling the cannister is no bueno.

My 07' did this too the first time I filled it up. After that I lifted up on the pump handle to kind of change the direction of the flow and that seemed to help.

i agree with the post above with vapor problem.

One thing you can try quit pumping fuel so fast in to your fuel tanks. Pump slow so the vapors can leave the tank. If it has a hold on the pump set it to the slowest setting you will never have that problem.

Take it from i guy who hauls fuel for a living. 9000 gallons at a time.

I'm a 2nd gen and do not mean to inpose but...if I read all these post correctly it would seem that the charcoal vent is clogged / not working. So as the tank is being filled with gas the only escape route for the air inside would be to exit out the same path as the gas coming in. Seems rigging up a test vent line would be in order to rule out whether the vent is at fault or not, also check the fill line going to the tank to make sure it hasn't collapsed.

Maybe even pull the fill line off to see if there is any obstructions. It's all up to the OP on how deternined he is to solve this annoying problem.

Okay well, the problem is definitely IN the tank. I removed this flexible rubber elbow right above the tank ...

    2r6gs39_2c76ebd51b9be909753be92e0b78b13b395a3a66.jpg

.... and dropped a socket down the neck from the top. It fell right through.

So then I got a little mirror-on-a-stick and with a little help from a flashlight I was able to look down into the tank and I could sure enough see something that looked like it was blocking the hole.

I don't think it was the little trapdoor thingy. It did look look disc-shaped, but it looked slightly bigger than the tank neck, like it was inside the tank to begin with. At any rate I stuck a big screwdriver in there and jammed it down into the tank. At that point I could neither see or feel anything else that might be a problem, so I put it all back together and went to the gas station with high hopes.

    But ... I'm still screwed. Nothing's changed.

I guess I gotta remove the tank and see what's up?

that was probably the screen that was put in there to stop people from siphoning fuel out of your tank :)
