Hello TW, quick question for you guys (I used the search feature but couldn't find a definitive answer, so I apologize in advance if this has been touched on already).

I have a 2013 4.0L V6 dcsb. I am currently under the Toyota Care maintenance window. When I took my truck in for a conventional oil change at 10,000 miles I mentioned that I was going to switch to synthetic oil only after 25,000 miles. The tech at this Toyota Dealership I was talking to tried telling me that that I can use conventional oil only with this engine. This doesn't sound right to me, but I am far from a car expert. Is this true?

Not true. There are a ton of use on here using synthetic oil.

I would consider a new dealer if the tech is saying that. Sounds like something a Jiffy Lube "tech" would say.

Toyota Tech or Service Rep? Sounds to me like Service Rep. Synthetic is fine in these engines.

This chart will help. i got it from a Toyota dealership last month.

You can use synthetic 5w30(I run full synthetic) in the V6 and 0w20 in the 4cyl engines. That's what it says in the manual. If I were you, I'd find another dealership.

Thanks for all of the replies. I figured he didn't know what the hell he was talking about. I will no longer be taking my truck here. I'll start doing my own maintenance once the 25,000 miles is up anyways.

Maybe the tech was suggesting that conventional oil would be sufficient for the engine?
Either way as others have said synthetic does just fine. I have been running it since 5k and doing just fine.

If that's what the tech was suggesting then OP should not go back to this dealer.

I did just that, used my "free" changes every 5k then did my own change last time at 25k and went with Mobile 1.

I'm using Mobil1 full synthetic...in the engine, front and rear differentials, and transfer case. Truck hasn't exploded yet...

Dealer does my oil changes under the 2yr/25k plan and charges $21 to upgrade to Mobil1. Cheaper than doing it myself, and the way the building is set up, I can watch the tech work.

Yeah I explicitly asked about synthetic oil. He said verbatim "You can not use synthetic oil with this engine. You can only use conventional oil." I have talked with another Toyota dealership here in Northern Colorado. They basically reiterated what you guys have said. No more Ehrlich Toyota for this guy.

Plus. Toyota uses 50/50 conventional/synthetic blend when they do the "free" oil changes or just a regular oil change. Well at least here in Canada.

switched to synthetic 95,000 miles back when my 1st gen had 141,000 on the odometer...no problem, no leaks, and still doesn't use any oil between changes.....

    go for it...

You can definitely run synthetic. I fail to see why you couldn't.

I'm under the Toyota Care also but I refuse to let them touch my truck unless absolutely necessary. I've used Mobil 1 in every vehicle I've ever owned with no issues. Now... I've bought into the hype and I don't know that it makes that much difference but it certainly doesn't hurt.
