I looked around at topper manufacturers and no one has any info on the 2016 toppers yet.

I saw something a bit interesting when comparing the 2016 and 2016 beds the other day. Looks like the panel that separates the bed from the cab is the exact same panel. They just use this spacer to extend bed height here. The rest of the bed is all new though. You can see how the bed on the 2016 (quicksand) goes right up to the rear window unlike the 2015 (white).

I was wondering about that myself. Thanks for the pics! I'm planning on ordering a top as soon as one is available (after my truck gets here), but haven't started looking yet.

Yeah, I think the difference in height is subtle (as tall as that spacer in the pic I posted) but that is enough to make a gen 2 topper on a gen 3 look like something is off. I also noticed that the tailgate seems about twice as thick as the gen 2 (which is good because people were bending them) so they have to consider that as well when making a topper for the gen 3.

The front track is also gone on the 2016. That is where I have some bicycle mounts on my 2013. I wonder how that bar is replaced by a track if you want it.

So, what toppers do you all prefer? Snugtop? Leer? ARE? What models?

Edit: I'm probably going to go with Snugtop XV

I never thought of that. That spacer bar, or whatever it is called, seemed kind of flimsy. Wonder how you would put bikes in there. I personally prefer the tried and true hitch mount but lots of people do take off their front wheel and put the bikes in the bed. Another design obstacle to consider is that new toppers that have a sliding glass window will have little space to meet the cab window at a flush level. The old bed had more space under the cab window to work with.

Perhaps that bar is designed to be removed for toppers?

Always wondered why Toyota chose to meet with Motortrend in a ditch to leak those pics the day before the official unveil.

I remember a comment in another thread that the front track could be easily installed on the 2016 but I have not investigated it thoroughly. Here are the Rocky Mounts I use on my 2013. I would like to transition them to the 2016 when the time comes.

I am wondering if the bar is made to be removable for this and for putting a camper on the 2016 so there is room for sliding windows to be flush with the cab.

It appears your rail could be mounted on a 2016, with the existing torx bolts.

Yep, it sure does. Wonder if anyone will notice the missing track on my 2013 when the time comes... :)

I wonder how a gen 2 topper would look on a gen 3. Probably would sit a bit higher but I imagine you will see people fitting them on.

True the new tailgate seems twice as thick.

Not familiar with toppers. Is it easy to access tools from the side window and is it secure?

Depends on the model/options. There are side windows that improve accessibility....like these:
