Face to face sales in Texas are legal as long as I know you're not legally prevented from buying the weapon yourself. I think he's just concerned it would be considered a straw purchase, which is defined as buying a weapon for someone who is "unable or unwilling" to buy it for themselves. There's more to it than that, but that is the part that applies to you.

I don't doubt it, it's just the "unwilling" part or "not wanting to be on paper" part that would be sort of in the gray area here. Like if I had a pistol you liked and I was looking to sell then our purchase is 100% legit. If I bought it from a dealer for you to keep you from going through a background check or having to do paperwork then it's a straw purchase.
