Yeah, I'm pretty sure I could be convinced to leave a 550i all alone :D

but anyways, for the topic where you were comparing the G80 etc, wouldn't it be better at times to have it controlable by the driver like with a ARB locker or something?

I mean I know personally from plenty of times on the track the computer isn't always a good option. The computer doesn't understand the full situation or what you are trying to do and may actually kick something in and cause problems. Think of drifting, if you had traction control it wouldn't work.

Not saying that traction control isn't good etc, but in terms of skilled drivers etc would it not be better if it was up to the driver of what happens? I'm not a fan of auto lockers or anything auto at times because of that. Like for an auto locker it won't be fully aware of the circumstances. What if you are aware of whats coming up and know it will need to be locked?

Even something as simple as in traffic, an auto transmission will continue to change gears I know with my car I usually throw it in DSG while in traffic for that reason, stop and go traffic I never go faster than 15km, it always changes gears to second gear, and then it gets jumpy from the way the transmission works in my car, it basically engine brakes on you because you stop giving it throttle right when it changes gears. The cars computer doesn't fully know whats coming like you would.

I would say yes. I would prefer being able to lock up before I go into something I know I'm going to get into trouble it, or be able to lock up once it trouble and know where I stand. Others might not agree but autolockers are not nearly as popular as selectable lockers are for sure offroad.

The G80 is not computer controlled. Once the tires hit 120 rpm of speed differential the locker fully engages and the tires will spin at the same speed until torque is not applied or the tires are traveling faster than 20 mph (that last part is IIRC, I think it's 20 mph but it could be less). There are situations where the locker will not perform as well as expected and situations where it will do just fine.

I'd be curious to see how an AWD system would compare. The subaru system, mitsu system and quattro system all send power to the wheels with the most traction. Hell I've seen mitsu evo out perform trucks in sand, i would love to see how they would compare if they had the ground clearance of a 4x4. Rally goes through some of the toughest conditions and they all use AWD.

I'd think between the open center differential, computer controlled braking, and clutch pack necessary for those vehicles to work reliability on trail would be compromised compared to a simpler 4WD implementation.

The difference between these systems is in their lack of ability to send enough torque to the wheels with traction to use off road. My 04Runner with a multi mode drive train including a lockable center Torsten differential was really good on road in slippery conditons.

There is too much slippage in the center differential in order to make the unit functional on dry pavement, to allow enough torque to be equally distributed when needed off road.

Warranty and maintenance are at the bottom of reasons why someone chooses a particular vehicle. And yeah, I am sure it shed SOME costs. But show me what powertrains are failing for GM before 100k. I will gladly wait your made up response to this...

Sterdog is adamant that there are better options out there but can't provide one that COMES ON OTHER VEHICLES FROM THE FACTORY that is BETTER than the G80 for ALL the situations the average driver may face. He keeps battling but clearly can only find single situations where ONE option MIGHT be better lol. He is beating this failure point of view to death.

Nice try. A LSD is NOT great for offroading. It transfers power back and forth between tires that have traction. A FULLY LOCKING differential like the G80 means BOTH tires at the same time are spinning. If a LSD was better than this, then all ATVs and other offroad vehicles would be using them. Do they? No. They all are fully locked.

Are we still arguing over the G80?

I was labeling Sterdog the fanboy. The average driver is not going hardcore offroading. They may hit the dunes or go camping or some trails once in awhile which the G80 is great for. Then they head back on pavement to go to work the next week. That's what ALL these trucks are catered towards for the most part. If you are hardcore offroading then yes, you want a selectable, fulling locking differential on the rear axle. But again, what's the use if you can ONLY use it in 4low? That's for really slow, boring off roading. I would rather be ripping up the dunes and the G80 is perfect for that. Better for towing too which a LOT of people use their trucks for.

You done yet. I've moved on. If you need proof hit some trails.

They are all fully locked... with selectable lockers lol.

There will be no more chewing. This guy is all personal now. He's made my ignore list, a list even BlueT is not on :D. If he's seriously trying to say he's going to hit the dunes in a stock Z71 and show up a bunch of Tacoma fans because of his super autolocker he's out of his mind. This is a real desert truck:

Not a Colorado. People don't buy Colorado's to "blast dunes". They buy Colorado's because they thought their Cobalt was too ghey and the dealer talked them into trading.
