You didn't see my video then. All you need is a suspension lift and it does better than the Tacoma (which would also need a different suspension lift.)

I like how EVERY source is somehow biased or bought off to you. Basically every major auto publication/reviewer has put GM up top and yet to you, they ALL are biased in some way or it's some conspiracy against Toyota lol. Nice excuses...

BTW in no way am I saying you can't go have fun on the beach or on some dunes some where in the desert with a Z71. If you want to "blast dunes" you should probably consider a truck with stock long travel support and a large community of modders to draw on for custom bracing and suspension designs. Just sayin.

To have fun on the dunes doesn't mean I need to be jumping the truck. Running around in 2wd at 50 mph is pretty fun for people who don't make that sort of thing their life.

I am now GMHIV positive. There is a G80 stuck up in my intestines somewhere.

More G80 information if anyone wants it:

The G80 does not have a good name in the OR world. Maybe it's undeserved. That's up to each person to decide.

He was about as blunt as a baseball bat to a baseball. I'm not saying he's a genius or that his opinion on YouTube is correct. It's just more information at this point to show I'm not the only one who has heard of and experienced troubles with the G80.

Auto diffenretials are not all crap and I have to disagree with the presentation to some degree They are what they are and his most correct accesment was that they are situational. They and versions like them have been around a while.

The problems with them with drivers I have spoken to, occurred when unconcerned drivers using them for work who don't use them correctly or in off road situation where there are continually sudden changes in traction. Let's face it, they are a compromise in a truck whose other parts are just as suseptable to failure in the same time. That's why Toyta does not use them...but you don't see contractors using Toyota trucks for plowing and the like around here either.

As I mentioned, we plow the road with 3/4 ton diesels with these things that are leased and replaced writhin 70k miles. None has had a problem with them in a short time of leasing . But, they are privately "owned" and not abused beyound the work they do.

The electronic devises are governed which helps but look everywhere and you will read precautions in their manuals. Automatic mechanical devises get subjected to abuses beyound their design More easily.

So, I can't get on the "hate the g80" band wagon so easily ( or similar devices) when they have served us well and the contractors who worked for us. You just have to be careful about where and when you use them.

$1200 sounds like a lot to an individual. But imagine my relief when after using a Deere Dozer off and on for a week and the next week the business owner him self turn the differential in to scrap metal and it was $10k just for parts.....let alone the monster we had to hirer just to move it on to a flat bed.

So shit happens and $1200 is nothing for repair in equipment that is used hard and long. If they broke down in the way indicated, GM would not be leasing as many with them as they do. For a contractor, $1200 is not that big a deal for the type of service they expect. Off road is not one.

Absolutely; the role out for Tacoma was in Tacoma at off road demo grounds. The role out ( one of them) for the Colorado ? Malibu Beach.....and not even on the beach, just the tarred roads along the shore line. Embarrassing ! But, it does tell you what car makers do to present their cars in the best and only way they can.....viva la hot top ! (A GM saying)

Fair enough. My truck did have about 120,000 km on it when it lost the G80 and luckily mine didn't grenade. I'm just not happy with a differential I take up in remote places that has a set lifespan in some ways. I'm not here to say it's the shittiest differential ever, it has its place, but I wouldn't want it in my truck for what I do with it. I'm by no means a lifestyle offroader and I'd prefer an ARB, which is an aftermarket option anyways. Once again though, my point was that other guy kept bagging on me saying I had no links or facts to back up my criticisms of the G80. It's name offroad is the gov bomb, and that's not some shit I made up for TW. It is what it is.

Oh, I don't doubt it that it has that reputation. But I am always surprised to see such units used that way. But the problem isn't necessarily with the system, it's the bean counters or after maker sellers who promote it for use it might not be suited for. It's not the first time. Secondly, whomever makes the g80 could easily make a better, more durable version but you and I couldn't afford it. Now if our tax dollars are buying it for a military truck, sure. All I know is, I became an off roader by necessity and we literally had to use skidder trails some days to move workers and only my Toyota and another private vehical could do it some days. The 2 wd contractor trucks with these units did surprising well but ONLY when the trails started to look like roads. Your discription of your experience seems pretty much in line of what a manufacturer expects from these units in terms of use and life expectancy.

Most failures of G80s are catastrophic and it's likely because the materials aren't the greatest. IIRC the G80 itself is worth about 200-300 dollars, it's more to fix because it wrecks shit when it goes, which is extremely cheap for an Eaton product. That probably has something to do with why they aren't overbuilt. In general GM Z71 trucks are built stock for very mild logging road type use so that level of construction is fine. It's when, like you said, it's pressed into service where it's abused that failure often occurs. Just FYI I think I only actually went off road with the Sierra twice myself and it blew shortly after that during the winter at a stop sign.

Perhaps not the new one...but the Colorado role out was in 2015 models. The gen2 was their bench mark and Colorado definitely excels at bikini watching.

I think you said it as well as well as anyone can. But we ask, what is the alternative when the subcontractor submits a bid to GM. You can't go with Toyota systems (manual locker) for plowing or use by multiple drivers. You get a guy jumping into a truck he will only use for one day, he's not reading the manual for manual locker. Look at the Tundra. They don't even offer the locker because they compete as a work truck...not even in their first intro of the pro series. So, they use a slightly less effective system in 4 hi some would say, with an open differential. No breakage there. The biggest selling point IMO, is it's automatic use in 2 wd trucks. This is contractor domain and why GM dominates this field over Toyota. Will you ever see a Tundra version 1/2 ton 2 wd van with an auto limited stiff mechanical differential...propably not. Many contractors love them and will never go off road or use them hard.
