there is definitely merrit to their claims. even just searching google, you can find plemty of people with melted winch lines. typically people who just swapped out their steel cable for synthetic. by the way, clear your drum of all burrs if you ever do so.

it may be harder to determine with some companies vs others, but most reputable companies manufacture winches with brakes inside and outside of the drum. For example, Smittybilt; when they list a winch as a "comp" series winch. they aren't just tossing synthetic line on it and giving you an aluminum fairlead. they are actually relocating the brake for the purpose that superwinch outlines. there is actually very little difference in the dimensions of the winch, so visually it can be difficult to determine the brake setup, however if you crack the winches open, it is very obvious what type it is.

IMO, get one with a brake that is external to the drum. even if the heat didn't completely melt your line, the mroe heat it is exposed to, the shorter it's lifespan.

Always entertaining watching destructive testing of any kind :D

Me either, and most manufactures offer synthetic on pretty much every model. I was browsing winches the other day and came across it. Superwinch only offers or recommends synthetic on the Talon (most expensive) series of winches.

exactly what I was thinking. And it can pull 9k which is easily enough for one of our trucks.

Other than the motor and planetary gears, I've never thought about how the other guts of a winch are set up (total noob here), but this makes sense. Heat degrades pretty much everything over time, and having the brake providing friction inside the drum could build massive amounts of heat.

Viking winchlines and their thimbles are fairly popular. 100' of their line and a safety thimble combo is almost $400 so that jump in price kinda makes sense.

But how about that winch alone?

That's an awesome looking roof rack. Looks like you would be able to stow more stuff if you took the foam insert out of the top lid.
