You know... Up until the late 17th century it was extremely common for people to have two 4-hour sessions of sleep. It was universal, and cross cultural. Only in the last 200 years have humans developed the notion of a ONE 8-hour sleep period.

Same! Advise anybody with a significant other to get a RTT.

My gf already loved camping and hiking, but now it is a no brainer to convince her to go!

Don't think so. The first sleep, second sleep bi-modal sleep cycle was common in children, again, across cultures all over the world.

What seemed to have changed it was technology. Candles, oil powered lamps, and large changes in social attitudes about the value of time / efficiency etc.

Look at it this way... If you feel awake at in the middle of the night, it's okay to mod your truck and then go back to sleep. ::playball:

I guess 200 years from now, our descends will be sleeping 24-7 when they're all plugged into the Matrix. :stirthepot:

Before I had the truck I was an extreme desert backpacker and hiker. Slept on ground on many desert peaks and other grand places.

When I got the truck, is like having a palacial estate on wheels.

So I've been sleeping in the cab for seven years now.

What I do is I pull the seat bottom cushions out, hinges modified for quick release pins, they get pulled like a parachute rip cord and seats fly outta the truck, then fold the seat backs down flat. I use backpacking mattress, sleep diagonal. Other minor mods to increase comfort.

I do this because I like having all the benefits of a hard sided camper and no cost. Considering all types of possible weather events, hard sided wins against all. No extra cost, basically free. No extra weight to haul around. Nothing visibility different from the exterior of truck. And extremely stealthy. Can sleep virtually anywhere.

Ive shared my technique before, probably in this thread.

Usually after such a statement, five or six people respond stating how that it would never work for them.

    I agree.

It's odd, goofy, and different. Just like me. :)

Taking a step back from the discussion of shelter, I think what matters most is folks getting out to explore by any means possible.

In the end, It matters not what shelter is chosen. It's whatever works for the individual.

Think you could post a picture of how you sleep in the back?

Also... how tall are you? I am 6'3" and tried a couple months ago as there was some hard rain, I side sleep kinda in the fetal position, but still did not sleep that great. So for times when I need to sleep in the truck, I would to try again soon. But have also thought about just getting a Bed mat for the truck and sleeping in the back under the shell...

Sleeping in the back of the truck is classic. One of my friends still does this. But of course you have to move all the stuff out of the way to sleep, so extra work involved.

    @Drainbung is right. I am 4'6" tall.

Anyone want to buy some slightly used and never off-roaded Dakar's?

Time to put the leaf springs on the correct side of the axle.
