My wife’s car is a 2011 v6 Rav4 and it takes 5w-30. You already see the intervals - 10k assuming synthetic.

I think if one as a lick of commonsense and can hold a wrench without getting injured can change their own oil, or do simple auto maintenance.

You can only infer it from your experience and perceived observations. Do you have any direct proof or knowledge?

I see you have an '05; I'll assume you have an auto. Let me ask you this....
How often do you change your ATF?
    100K per Toyota's original interval?
    60K per Toyota's new interval?
    12.5K/2 year per Aisin's recommendation?
    Other?

    Why?

    I’ll answer that.

I drain and refill my Tran fluid every 15k with approximately 4 qts. Why? Because it isn’t very costly.

why do I change my oil every 5k miles? Same reason.

    why so much anger?

From experience, I've sat in on these kind of meetings as an engineer and I've changed the transmission fluid between 50 and 80k miles based on experience with other transmissions both in my personal vehicles and in industrial settings.

Originally Toyota said this was lifetime transmission fluid, no fluid is lifetime.

When companies started to recommend 10k mile changes people scoffed at that saying hell no, now people are resistant to it. Most of these engines back then were the same engine, they just changed what the manual said at the time. Same with the push to 0w oils, it was the same engine, just epa numbers required the change to a thinner oil for milage.

If you just drive on the highway all the time 10k is probably fine, but if you do stop and go city driving you should rethink that

I change my oil between 5 and 7k miles, having seen pictures of the insides of other 1gr engines with 10k mile changes and the inside of mine ill stay with more frequent changes.

I would wager that these recommendations are based on a 150k-200k miles expected lifetime average for these engines. That's a fair estimation for use but if you want to keep your truck longer then you will need to adjust accordingly.

My original point is, people that say the engineers said do this do not realize it's not the engineers saying it.

Gotcha, my mistake I read the 20 videos as he had only done 20 videos. I really had no point other than to point out that he had made more than 20 videos.

So no actual direct knowledge? Just what you can infer and suppose from your experience and very limited sample size...not that there's anything wrong with that.

I used the ATF example, to illustrate the disparity between 'penny piching' Toyota and Aisin upselling 'unnecessary' fluid intervals. Or, should we assume Aisin engineers are in the same camp as Toyota engineers and be changing our ATF at 7,500 miles/1 year? Just trying to see the consistency in your logic.

    No worries:)
I like a good argument, as long as there is something to be gained by either side; preferably both sides.
Argument for argument's sake is unproductive.

No experience, just about 12 years working in industry as an engineer the last 5 dealing with transmissions and engines of some type and having been involved with these type of decisions and what gets put to print.

You can do 10k oil changes all you like, but what a company recomends is not driven by engineering. As your atf example shows with your own thinking.

Yes, I know how to read. The person I quoted had a 2007 rav4 and in the image that was posted didn't clarify the year.

Your statement that their recommendations on atf changes are monetary.

I agree. And what about number of start cycles? Long idles? Short trips? Starts under very cold conditions? Time between starts under cold conditions. Do these factors impact oil quality? I would imagine they do. If the manufacturer recommends 10K, then I'm likely to be changing it between 5K-7K.

5W-30 as I recall it. I also never used synthetic. Never burned a drop while '03 Acura would be down at least a quart at the 3K OCI.

Here is an analysis showing 10k mile oil changes ... dude has been tracking it since new... check out how little crap is floating in it after 10k miles... as opposed to at the first 4k... Which is why the MAIN early oil change should be the first one... the subsequent seem quite fine at 10k.
