So I'm the proud owner of a new 2021 Taco which replaced my 2006 which I loved. This is my 1st vehicle with Car Play. I've search the threads for my particular problem but haven't found anything. I apologize in advance if it's out there somewhere.

Here's my issue: about 1/2 the time my JBL Premium Sound system does not recognize my phone is connected or if it does, it's connected via bluetooth only even though I have a new lighting cable plugged it. I try unplugging and re-plugging but that doesn't work. I try waking my phone (Car Play is enabled when the phone is locked) but that doesn't work. I've tried connecting before I start the truck and after I start it, no difference. Usually I have to turn the truck off and restart it or switch my phone to airplane mode and then off and it will "sometimes" connect. Any ideas or do I need to visit my dealer?

Have you tried a different cable?

Well, that would be an obvious thing to try and no, I haven't because the one I'm using is brand new. But, point well taken, I will try a different cable. Thanks

Turn off your Bluetooth. Connect via cable. It could be prioritizing Bluetooth oner hard wire connections

Also CarPlay is picky about cables, try a cable from Apple (so not anker or anyone else).

I would definitely try using an apple cable just to eliminate that as the problem and make sure in the settings you are set for carplay and not android.

I try not to let the system confused, so I don't have my phone blue tooth paired with the system, and I only plug in via cable to the CarPlay usb port.
So far 75% of the time it works with no issues. 10% of the time I just need to plug and unplug to get it to work, 15% of the time it's connected but no music playing, I have to turn the audio on and off just so that the music can start playing

I have CarPlay on other vehicles too, it's definitely not 100% working every time. With enough plugging and unplugging, it eventually works. As far as having dealer to take a look, I wouldn't because I think there aren't many things they can do it's all software engineer's job fixing bugs at product development research centers.

I have this issue in both my 2019 rav 4 and my 21 Tacoma. New apple cable fixed it.

carplay def isnt the best with these vehicles, mine lags about 30 seconds to a minute before it gets to the point i can play music after ive plugged it in for the first time in a day. i can confirm it did work with anker and apple cable. also make sure youre not plugging in the center console because it wont work

The first step in CarPlay connecting is the system disconnecting the bluetooth connection with the phone. Everything CarPlay related goes through the data cable.

Thanks everyone, I will try another Apple lightning cable. I hope I don't have to disable bluetooth to use CarPlay, seems it ought to prioritize a cable connection over bluetooth but if all else fails, I'll try that too. It is set for Apple CarPlay and not android.

Correction, I also had to disable Bluetooth and get a apple brand cord.

Update. Seems if I disable bluetooth, my iPhone connects to CarPlay every time. It's a bit of a hassle but at least I have a work around. Thanks again.
