That crash was the result of folks suffering momentary brain fade. They were busy filming for youtube and lost their "situational awareness". My understanding is that they are both VERY experienced hot rodders and so there are lessons to be learned here.

The car had 1300HP and some ungodly amount of torque. It was idling high, around 2200 RPMs according to the driver, and he had to ride the brakes to keep the car's speed down. (They estimate that the car made 900 lb/ft of torque at that RPM!) Eventually the inevitable happened and the brakes failed completely. In hindsight they should have recognized that the high idle was a serious problem resulting in diminished control, turned the car around, and gone back to the shop, rather than continue to film.

Lots of morals to this sad story. Pretty brave of them to make it public if you ask me.

I absolutely love the Roadkill and similar resurrection type content, but I am always worried that one day the zip-tied-clapped-out stuff they drive on public roads is going to result in a bad outcome. You can also see super nice show cars like this Merc at every cruise-in that have questionable engineering choices and compromises in function because all the money went to paint and motor. These guys rear ended a minivan at 45 mph. What if it was full of kids?

And, this is a great way to get your balls sued off. The moment a lawyer hears that your six-figure custom fabricated stuff failed and caused an accident, you are going to pay out big money. Anyone driving a car like that just looks like they have assets to go after. Plus, these guys posted a video documenting that they knew that the throttle was sticking and the brakes were crap. Wow...

I had a car pull in front of my '68 Firebird when I was going 50-60 mph a few years ago, and when I nailed the brakes the rears locked and the front aftermarket disks did not do disk stuff. The rear end started coming around and then somehow I recovered at the last second and just missed the guy. This was my wake-up call, and after years if putting up with less than perfect brakes, I ripped the entire system out - lines and everything - and put in a good quality, part-matched setup. Then I took it to the best shop I know and had them safety check everything I did, and adjust whatever needed to be to optimize the parts I just put on. Was this cheap? Nope, but I had my wife in the car, and she's way more important to me than the money. Do I think I needed someone to double-check my work? Also no, but that's now going to happen anytime major surgery occurs.

Don't get sued, kill someone, and make the public hate the hobby. Fix you junk or stay home!

There’s a yellow ‘69 Super Bee local to me sitting on a farm next to a barn. It’s always had a car cover on it and I often pondered what was under it. I thought it to be a Plymouth Fury until one day I was driving by and the cover was off. A fleeting glance at 45 mph and 200’ away I knew what it was. Every other time since then it’s been covered. If I had the coin I’d inquire to see if they’d sell it.

I've bought a lot of cars for less than they were worth if the guy is finally ready to sell. Never hurts to make an offer. Just have a plan. Don't transport it home and then let it sit in the weeds next to your own barn.

Which brings up another problem, I don’t have a barn.
