Yes, my father in law had one. Sounded like it was ready to blow up it knocked so loud. Drove it for years.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma

Callaway also touched a handful of them. They put turbos in them!

Yup my 83 1.6/5sp named Peanut Butter. Gutless, but the old school direct injection will run on anything.

Friends of ours had a Rabbit diesel of that vintage. It shook the dashboard so much that stuff loosened and fell off. But they could drive it to Canada on a single tankful.

That's the US market Rabbit, built in the Westmoreland Pennsylvania plant. I had an '80 diesel. Same colour, German built for our market, with the round headlights, better trim and 5 speed, no ugly hub caps. Wider tires and Jetta rims. Actually a fun car to drive, You could really beat the snot out of them. The fuel economy was incredible (65 driving easy, 55 when beating on it, imperial gallons of course) but didn't like starting when it was -20.

agree with that statement! use to work with a guy older diesel VW, use to do his oil changes, and filter his oil then go directly into the fuel tank, along with filtered transmission fluid. said it ran just fine

The 5.0 LX 5 speed coupe was the ticket (no pun intended). The lightest and quickest of the bunch. My buddy worked plain-clothes for our local PD and had one as his work car. What a rocket.

This without the markings and lights. Just the radios.

Sounds like he had a helluva work car, would have been fun to drive for sure!
