...^^^... Long Story -- Short ... A friend of mine's big brother (Richard Quillen Sp ?) lived in Indianapolis and was from a small town near there (Crawfordsville IIRC) and the big brother had roots in the Indy 500 community (drivers & cars) and had connections with the Hulman-George family (Indy 500 Track). We would go for 3 days to the races, stay in Crawsfordville and always got good tickets to the 500 ... but what was more fun were the summer races on the infield track. Got to work in those races and check the driver's belts, nomex and etc. in line up on the false grid. The super cool part was ... I could take my camera and go to the edge of the track (LIKE THE PIC ABOVE) and take great photos (no guard rail there). This was back in the early 1970's ... never be able to do that today because of safety regs. I got pics taken in some cool cars and pics with some drivers and all those pics were lost in a job relocation move in the 1990's.

The 3rd pic above (guy taking pics on the track's edge) brought back those great memories ..

 

That's pretty cool.

As for safety, many changes regarding spectators in F1. Jimmy Clark himself was part of a race where 15 spectators were killed.. ..so sad.
