Looks like a Le Mans wagon front end. Strangely, I like it.

So it is. And not the only one of its kind, either.

That makes sense as the Toronado was Front Wheel Drive which would give the trailer section more room not needing a driveshaft and rear diff under it.

I know this is not one of those sweet Oldsmobile Franken-Campers, but it still is a camper and since the theme seems to be campers, I figured I'd add these pictures...

They weren't all Oldsmobiles, or campers, either!

As many on TW know, I'm a Navy brat. My dad was in the Navy from 1982 until 2007, and we moved A LOT. From 2000 to 2002, my dad was stationed at NAS Whidbey Island. One of the many perks of being active duty military is that the government pays for all relocation costs, including shipping one vehicle! In 2000, my parents bought a brand new GMC Safari conversion van, which we drove across the country in. My dad had his 1996 Nissan Pathfinder shipped, free of charge. Unfortunately, while the cost of having the Pathfinder shipped was paid for by the U.S. Government, we still had to pick it up. The Pathfinder ended up about two hours away from our new home, at a towing yard of some sort, in Seattle.

When we went to pick up the Nissan, I saw something I had never seen before. It was a Cadillac Eldorado (or possibly a Coupe DeVille), and everything behind the rear window had been chopped off and replaced with a multi-level car carrier. The cab of the Caddy had been left intact, so it still had a backseat. Like the Oldsmobile Toronados in these pictures, this Caddy was front-wheel drive. I'm guessing that since it was set up to haul two vehicles at a time, it was an early 1970s model with a 500cid V8.

Unfortunately I do not have any pics...

A 1973 Chevrolet Suburban ¾-ton 4x4 with an interesting story!

The original owner ordered this 'Burb new in 1973 for the sole purpose of towing a trailer, and he ordered it with virtually no options, not even A/C. This Suburban had an automatic transmission, an AM radio, and beefed-up chassis and suspension equipment. That was about it. I forget whether it had the 350 or 400 V8...

Anyway, due to the "impeccable quality" of steel used by GM at the time (sarcasm), this Suburban was starting to rust into oblivion by the late 1970s. The present owner bought it and saved it from ending up in a junkyard before it was ten years old. He lifted it, added a decent stereo with a cassette player, at some point had the rear windows filled in and smoothed over, and in 1982 had the truck completely repainted. Then, the Suburban went into storage for 35 years. The owner of this Suburban was convinced to show this truck after much prodding from friends and family, and made it's debut at the
    2017 Carlisle Truck Nationals!

This truck looks the same now as it did in 1982! The owner told me that those huge tires are even original!

    As for the specifics...

Yes, it runs and drives, is fully registered and insured, and thus is street legal; However, it was trailered to Carlisle from the owner's home in Delaware.

No, it still DOES NOT have A/C.

Yes, those are 35-year old tires!
