The GTO was named for a Ferrari, specifically the 250 GTO. That's probably why the 6.5 badges. At the time, the cubic inch displacement wasn't mentioned, that came later when owners wanted bragging rights. I got my license in '64 and knew 3 or 4 guys in HS who bought new '64, '65 or '66 goats. The 6.5 designation also gave more of a talking point vs. the Chevelle 396 of the time.

Oh, I know where the name came from. And I thought the same one thing about the possibility of the metric designation being sort of an homage to the Ferrari. I can tell you...growing up in Oklahoma, the metric designation wasn’t a talking point, . I’d begun to follow Formula One and endurance racing about the time you started driving. I was an avid reader of Road and Track, Car and Driver, and Sports Cars Graphic, so I was pretty well read for a young teenager growing up in rural Oklahoma. I remember being able to answer a question in math class because I knew the 3 liters, which Formula One had just gone to, was 183 cubic inches.

Just to add more confusion to the 'Liter' discussion, the car that sparked the conversation was a 1978 Trans Am. That car could have had 2 different 6.6 decals. If all else is correct, "T/A 6.6" would be a 400 Pontiac, while "6.6 LITRE" denotes a 403 Olds engine. Just sayin'.

    I had a ‘79 Toronado with that 403 Rocket in it and it wasn’t called a 6.6.

AND, this was a made for sale in Canada model. Metric speedo on the outer ring and Unleaded fuel only in French at the gas filler!:canada:

Reading these last couple of posts made me think!
They may have used a few of the metric designations for CID, but it wasn't normal in the 60's.
One of the very few that I recall was the 7 liter ford, almost everything else was CID such as the Chevy 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 396, 400, 402, 409, 427, Can Am 430, and 454.
Pretty much the same for all the Mopar's, Fords, Pontiacs, Buick's, Oldsmobile's, and the AMC's.
Now we have 2, the 6.6 and the 7 liter, are there more?
BTW, my 66 L-72 Impala has 427 flags on it, not 7 liter! :D
Never saw a 426 Hemi either with 7 liter badges, that just wouldn't sound right!

Ford used the 7 liter name on some 427s as they were involved in other types of racing in Europe at the time. The Trans-Am Series specified an engine displacement of 5 liters max, not an CC name, hence the 289 grew into the 302.

Don't forget, Ford had the 427, 428, and 429, I think the one they badged in the US as the 7 liter was a low hp 428.

I always preferred the look of a stripped-down Formula vs a Trans Am...

I remember 2.5, 3.2, 3.8, and 5.0 tags on Monzas and other GM H-Body cars through the '70s.

There a couple of Pontiac guys here locally...one has a '73 GTO with a 455, while the other has a '73 Grand Am with a 7.5 Litre...
