    Aha, that makes more sense.

I was ready to dive into my Mopar books again when I got home!

I don’t think they were building hemis in 1962. My guess is the big engines were the 383s and 413s. They did have a 426 wedge in the 60s, but not sure when it came out.

1951-1958 was the first run of the HEMI at 331 c.i.. From 1964-1971 was the 426 HEMI.

1962-1964 was the Max Wedge motors in 413 and 426 c.i.

    You forgot the 241, 270, 276, 291, 315, 325, 330, 341, 345, 354, and 392 early Hemis. That includes DeSoto and dodge trucks. Just sayin'...

I took auto mechanics in high school (69-70) and our instructor had bought a bunch of junk engines for is to disassemble. I called dibs on an old hemi, which I’d read about, but had never seen. I took it apart, measured the bore and stroke to determine it was a 354. Everything looked in good shape except for one cam lob that was almost perfectly round. What I remember most though, was how massive those old heads were. They weighed almost as much as a small block Chevy engine block!

I love all the old pictures like these because it's neat imaging what everything is. A couple years ago the local Chevy Dealer had put a large picture from 1969 in the newspaper talking about them remodeling. It was so cool seeing the entire rows of Camaro's, Chevelles, and Nova's right in front.

When l was in aviation school someone donated a small ground Tug that would have been used to tow airplanes and equipment with. We were all blown away when we opened the engine compartment and saw a Hemi in there! We all wanted to take it apart badly but the instructor closed it up and chased us off, still think he was planning to take it home.

Fold the windshield and disconnect the exhaust stack and I can get that bitch on a C-5 and strapped down in under 5 minutes.

Yep, I was just saying the beginning and the end of the early generations. I knew there were many in between.

...^^^... I bought a 1951 Chrysler Imperial Limo (actually a funeral family car). I got it as a "project car" and I believe that it had a "hemi" and a weird combo of a clutch with an automatic transmission.

IIRC ... The engine looked a lot like the above pic.

Probably Fluid Drive? Basically a primitive torque converter in front of a manual transmission. Instead of a flywheel you had a hydraulic coupling. You still needed to use the clutch to shift gears, but the fluid coupling meant no stalling when you let the clutch out, and you could theoretically start and stop in any gear, without shifting (obviously your 0-60 performance would suffer)
