I noticed this the other day and it seems a bit excessive for a truck with 2k miles on it. Am I putting too much load on this truck or is this normal for atkinson cycle engines? I generally stay under payload with the occasional load that is a bit more but only for going around the corner. Cosmetically I couldn't care less, but I am curious if this truck is running abnormally rich or something. The only threads I could find on this were about carbon residue on the rear bedside and not so much related to this concentrated of a build up. This is not my first truck by any means but I've never noticed this before on any of my previous trucks.

Interesting - is that actually carbon? Do you have access to a scan tool which can show your fuel trims? That reminds me of a carburetted engine that's running way too rich.

I assume so? My understanding is that direct injection engines are known for carbon build up, and these atkinson engines are part direct injection or something. I do not have access to such a scan tool but now I'm wondering about getting my hands on one.

    Interesting.

I had no black soot on the stock tune. Now tuned, I get a little bit at the bottom of the exhaust tip.

Your engine is still breaking in so maybe that’s why:notsure:

FWIW, I had 165k miles on my 4.0 ranger and the exhaust pipe was super clean inside.

That refers to carbon build-up in the heads, valve face, etc. This appears to be excess fuel and while I don't think it's likely to a huge concern, I would get it looked at. As your brand-new, take it to the dealer and ask them to check it out.

Did you go up any extra steep inclines? I've heard the 3.5 has oil burning issues when climbing steep hills.

Hm. Could be! I'm guessing that probably is the case, it just seems odd. I also had a ranger with a 4.0! Bought it around 140k and the odometer turned over 180k when the buyer was taking it on a test drive, and the exhaust pipe on that truck was also clean. :notsure:

From what I saw and keep on noticing, all rangers with 4.0, 3.0 and 2.3 all had
super clean tailpipes. I even had K&N 63 series and welded in magnaflow muffler.

At the time when I had my ranger, my buddy had a 13 trd sport and the exhaust pipe turned pitch black on the inside almost instantly. I did hear that the 2GR FE ran a bit rich though.

Decent amount of city driving (Atlanta) so I suppose that would mean it does its fair share of idling, but its mostly just low speed stopping and starting. I did just drive to Mississippi and back, and I did some poking around and saw some article saying that direct injection engines may produce more build up if running at high speeds for long intervals. But, this definitely caught my eye before that trip.

Let it break-in, do an oil change, check again, IMO.

That's water mixing with some soot in the exhaust. Your trucks fine.

the angle of the exhaust looks like it's angling up slightly. This allows water mixed with soot to wick instead of drip

I don’t have that. I want to chop that shit because I get carbon dust on my rear fender. But none coating the tip like that.

Is it soot? Looks pretty crusty...like burnt on tar.

Funny you should post a picture like that. If i run premium gasoline in my 3.5 v6 the tail pipe looks exactly like that. Switching back to 87 octane fuel....after a couple tanks the tail pipe end turns to a nice tanish/gray color. All that sooty black is gone.

I seen on a YouTube vid about likes dislikes of the 2023 Tacoma V6. The dude say periodically it go in diesel model to recirculate gas emissions to clean out carbon buildup
