I'm not a copper, however I have 2 teenaged BS'ers. I just don't see how the this is possible. Perhaps OP used a $hitty impact?

You can see the o-ring from where I removed the plug and inserted the drain valve in the second pic.

I like the function of the drain valve in that it pre-drains excess oil preventing a messy removal of the cannister.

I have the TRD Skid and learned after the first time that the oil will splash and leave spots that need to be wiped down.

The plug has never been over-torqued but the cannister has when oil changes were done at the dealership (during the 2yr maintenance plan).

Now that I do my own oil changes, everything runs smoothly.

    I also installed Fumoto! :)

Something is not adding up. maybe you had the impact on tighten, not loosen, or you have a poor quality, low torque impact wrench? Every once in a while, the drain cap will be tight enough to remove the housing instead of the drain cap. When that happens, I retorque the housing, and break out the Milwaukee 3/8 impact, spins the drain right out. Not sure what is going on in your case. Ski

I've been dealing with these on my Toyota's since 2012, through hundreds of thousands of miles and countless oil changes.
Sometimes done by the dealer, sometimes Walmart, sometimes Quick lube and sometimes me.
Never had any of the problems that seem to trickle down the 3rd gen forum feed on TW.

If lefty loosey, righty tighty isn't working, maybe TW needs to collectively hit the gym, IDK.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Impact drill hit with enough force to break off one of the fins.
I quit after that not wanting to damage the canister any more.
    Git over it

i dunno, i still suspect that it was over-torqued last time.

After my last round of oil changes in the garage, I’ve realized that taking the extra 5-10 minutes of loosening the oil drain bolt and filter housing then letting the oil run out slowly is much less frustrating than dealing with the sudden volume of oil gushing out, then the cleanup.

I just loosen it enough to where the oil starts seeping out and let it drain in a big bucket. when it stops i then unscrew it and dump the remaining oil that's in the cap in the bucket. messy, yea, but mostly oil on my hands.
i have the skid plate off. i guess some models have a hole in the skid plate and do not have to remove it. in that case, yea, big mess.

Then you are doing it wrong. leave the cannister housing on the truck, insert 3/8 extension attached to impact wrench into drain cap square hole, pull trigger, drain cap will spin loose no drama, unless it was waaaay over torqued to begin with. I fail to see how you broke fins off the cannister, using the method, described above. No fins are contacted by anything. the worse you could do it, spin the housing off. Something is not adding up. He used the impact with the housing tool after failing in his attempt to remove the plug.
    Double fail, apparently..

My guess is u might have cross threaded the bolt when putting it back in from your other oil change .

No I used a pipe wrench to hold the canister still after I removed it.
Impact drill was used on the plug

No, it was hand tightened before tourqed
pretty sure it would have leaked if it was cross threaded,

Removing the cap or not, I have NEVER gotten out without a mess on this thing. So I just make life easier and don't.

This is how clean the cannister/filter looked after pre-draining--much less of a mess.

And of course, the aluminum housing that replaced the plastic.
