Yea hanging out with Justin will do that to ya ;) I'm not going dual duty. I'm going long range, reliable, expo style. Don't need 40 inch TSLs when I can throw down some planks, stack a couple rocks, crawl it, and go on my merry way. Of course I don't plan on racing the Hammers either.

Like I said, you can take a minivan camping on OBX, no reason to build an expo rig here. Meanwhile you have Harlan and and Mountain City within a few hours where the bigger and knarlier you can wheel it the better.

Unless you're planning on taking a month off and going to the Pacific coast of Mexico or the Hudson Bay or something there's no reason to keep an expo truck in NC.

so whats the best place to drive on the beach and camp while doing so on the coast in NC? I have been trying to figure out a long weekend trip from north NC to south but i want to stay on the coast, as much beach as i can and camp the entire way.

My bad. When I think "camping" I go next level and the first thing that pops into my head is roof top tents, auxillary gas tanks, enough recovery gear to pull out an Abrams, and spares hanging off the bedsides.

Right, tents and coleman stoves. Those are good too:D

Note how many ferry routes are down there. They go to most of the outer islands. And most of them have campsites. Gonna hit up that route June/Julyish depending on when I get a good 4 day weekend.

And that's only the little bit of the Outer Banks I've been able to research. I'm dyin' to find some of these spots I've seen pics of. Some badass looking trails with plenty of off-camber sections right along the ocean. Sign me up.

I know a couple people that live halfway and have extra bed rooms and couch space ;) Or yard space if that's your gig.

More lurking on Expedition Portal and I found out the Trail Team Island is Portsmouth and is all 4WD accessible with no facilities. Just a ghost town. They're planning an Ocracoke trip in May, I won't be able to make it but info is on ExPo.

In Conclusion: F Ocracoke, Core Banks and Portsmouth are where it's at.

PS - This whole outer banks thing is making me wanna say F the meet and go camping before it gets to crowded. Or that's just the middle of the night on duty talking. Someone wake up and reply to this friggin thread so I can stop editting and talking to myself.

Freeman Park in Carolina Beach is always fun and not far. There aren't any rules against liquor - just no glass bottles - so it gets kinda crazy overnight when camping. $40 year pass or $10 a day.

Still awake? yea man there needs to be a meet like this as well this summer/early fall. It would be nice to go when the crowds would not be as bad.

I'd do one truck to Ocracoke definitely but going out to Portsmouth should definitely be a group thing.

We do OBX a few times a year - since I have the wife and kids in tow we usually rent a house - although camping is pretty fun, too - we did that last year.

There are some pretty fun trails in the sand near Hatteras and the Shipwreck Museum...

We never worry about renting a house on the beacj because we usually take either the FJ or the taco so we can ride out on the sand, set up our spot and chill all day long.....

We're going June 14-20- hope to see someone there - Nags Head....
