This is late, but should answer the older vehicle question. Looks like if you want CarPlay, you will need to buy the 2019 Tacoma.

Update 3: Toyota told us that it doesn't have any plans to support CarPlay in pre-2019 vehicles at this time, even though models like the 2018 Camry and 2018 Sienna have its Entune 3.0 system.

Just think of how shitty and unusable Entune is going to be when your Tacoma is still running 15+ years from now.

No need to wait that long. In 2 or 3 years it will already be obsolete since it will never be updated on a regular basis. For example the Camry has Entune 3.0, but it’s likely not to receive a CarPlay update? How crazy is that lol.

Yep you are totally right about that. I'll be getting an aftermarket HU at some point for sure (and hopefully a sound system upgrade too). It's a drag but Toyota has never been one to innovate with the latest tech. They bank on reliability. Hopefully we will at least see that much with the 3rd gen.

It seems that aftermarket “mirroring” kits require some connection other than the Bluetooth that’s in the stock head unit (HDMI or Ethernet). I do know that Airplay requires WiFi between the Apple mobile device and the mirroring display. So it could be (I don’t know) that the HW is not identical and a mere SW update won’t do anything, if our headunits don’t have the network connection to the phone. I don’t know how the Android version of mirroring works.

Android Auto uses a wired USB connection to the phone. It's not so much mirroring as it pushes a certain UI to the headunit allowing control over basic phone features using the HU touchscreen and/or voice recognition. Google's voice recognition is literally a million times better than Entune and I think that alone will be worth upgrading for. Also their traffic and nav data is better and you can actually use your phone's native music player features as they were intended to be used.

Wired USB for android auto will soon be a thing of the past...recently announced Kenwood/JVC units coming with wireless android auto soon. I will probably be getting one to go with my soon to be purchased OEM+ system.

OK. That's great news. I'd love to hear about your experience. Thinking that kind of setup (with OEM+) will be my end goal.

Bumping this thread because 2019 Avalon has Carplay.

Does this mean other Toyota vehicles like the Tacoma will be able to run it?

In the "beating a dead horse" department...

I discovered today that our Entune (NOT Entune 3.0) infotainment systems run on an OS called Blackberry QNX and that "At the Geneva Motor Show (in 2014), Apple demonstrated CarPlay which provides an iOS-like user interface to head units in compatible vehicles. Once configured by the automaker, QNX can be programmed to handoff its display and certain functionality to an Apple CarPlay device." - quoted from the QNX wiki.
It seems that Toyota ALREADY knows that they could update our systems to provide Apple CarPlay. It is a matter of adding the code module (that Blackberry QNX has) to our Entune systems. (see https://business.financialpost.com/technology/apple-inc-carplay-ios-monday)

This is a real Load of Crap. The headunits have the capability, its just stubborn of Toyota to not enable it.

BTW, Entune 3.0 is run on an OS called AGL (Automotive Grade Linux) which is open source and as such owners with these units will see lots of neat stuff for their cars we'll never see.

The least that Toyota could do is add the CarPlay code to all of is Blackberry QNX Entune folks who shelled out $1500 for a partially functional system.

    PS - Sorry Android folks.

Read through thread, but still can't find whether 2019 Tacomas have Entune 3.0?

The 2019 Rav4 has Entune 3.0 & my wife was pretty disappointed her 2018 doesn't. From what she's seen the 3.0 has remote start capability from the app

I can’t believe Toyota won’t at least send out an update. It’s a kick in the nuts that my 45k Highlander doesn’t and won’t get CarPlay.
