    Hi,

I went to a driveshaft shop to replace the carrier bearing on the driveshaft of my prerunner and he removed the old carrier bearing by hitting the grease cover on the inside of the driveshaft.

    Picture of the part

He did not reuse the metal cover as it was deformed and told me that it was not needed and that they tend to cause noise with time.

This is how he returned the driveshaft. I can see the grease exposed to the elements.

Should I follow their advice or should I fabricate something to better protect the bearing?

In short the " driveline shop " screwed up the shield by using it to beat the old bearing off and did not replace it. They are saying that they left it off because it causes problems.

You shouldn't have to do anything.

That is some bull shit right there. If it were me I would take it back and demand that they install a new shield properly. It is there for a reason. They should have pressed the bearing off instead of beating on the shield.

Don't settle for this sub-par work. You paid them to repair it, make them do what was paid for.

You mean Toyota has been putting the shields on for no reason and this driveline shop knows more than Toyota?!

    OP, take it back.

Update: The guy gave me my money back. He didn't want to remove the bearing and risk damaging it.
I ended up packing the exposed bearing area with some Mobil 1 grease I had around to try and protect the bearing. I guess I'll keep a look at it when I do u joint maintenance.

    wow fuck that shop.

The slinger (official term for that part) is pretty necessary to make sure that shit doesnt get inside the open to the elements bearing.

So far the grease is holding up. I used a bottle of Mobil 1 Synthetic that separated, so the consistency is closer to soap than it is to grease.
