My carrier bearing has been puking like that from brand new, albeit not quite as bad. My assumption in the first few thousand miles was that it was just excess grease being purged after assembly and finally getting hot enough to lose some viscosity.

If this solves your problem I would much rather replace with a serviceable unit, all these sealed bearing surfaces keep maintenance time and costs down (all important when the services are free) but at what expense to the lifespan of parts?

I don’t expect this replacement to solve my problems. Perhaps a temporary bandaide, but doubtful it will be long term. I think the clunk I’m hearing, and feeling is the crap transmission rapidly dumping a gear at the last second.

Why would they bother to check if they were going to lengthen it anyway?
Not doubting you; just seems inefficient.

It's a standard at the shop I went to, and maybe an industry standard to check the balance of the shaft before apparently just to be sure that there isn't a serious deformity in the shaft that would cause the new welds to fail. I guess this is because I came in complaining about vibrations and issues so they do it to be extra safe, even though it was a new shaft on a new truck.

Gotcha! I don't actually work there, but as I understand it it is a standard at the shop to check balance before and after when a customer is complaining about vibrations and driving issues just to check the integrity of the part. I don't know much more about it than that but I do know I went from having driveline vibrations to not having them thanks to their work!

That’s one way to describe it...

As I mentioned before, I suspect the carrier bearing failure to be an unrelated issue to the ‘clunk’ I’ve heard and felt when coming to a stop. As well as unrelated to the rear diff howl. They may have some impact on each other, but I don’t expect either issue to be permanently resolved when I get my truck back. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Ok I misunderstood, thought dealer said carrier bearing was causing both. I have the harsh thump on downshift first couple times in cold mornings along with the other noise. May be different for me as I am only a lowly 4cyl sr also

They never outright claimed the carrier bearing was or was not the source of the issues. But simply that that was an issue they found.

I’m skeptical, but I’ll let them replace it. I don’t see how the carrier bearing could have any impact with such an abrupt and harsh downshift. This rapid drop from the tranny hanging on to 3rd too long before changing to 1st has been covered by others here. Until Toyota owns up to the issue we’re all kinda on our own. Another reason I wish I’d bought a manual.

To be honest I’m actually not hating it.

Turns out from the drivers seat you can’t see the less than desirable exterior. It’s got decent pep and driving manners. My wife and I both are enjoying the extra interior room for our daughter and dogs. Don’t tell Toyota I’ve been carrying my dogs in their rental, it’s against the agreement :anonymous:

Just tell them you have a prior agreement with the dog that seems their agreement bill and void
