x10000 IMHO if you don’t trust your self or the gun to be locked and loaded at all times.(unless you don’t have a HCP/CCP and are transporting the gun or cleaning the gun) Then you should get a different gun and or practice a hell of a lot more.

Hopefully you carry a reload, and practice with it. I only carry a snubbie when I can't fit the 1911.

    Likewise with the Springfield XD.

Both the trigger AND grip safety must be depressed to release the pin.
You can toss the loaded gun into a washing machine full of pocket knives and both of those aren't going to be depressed at the same time.

I haven't heard of it on a model newer than a 70 series Colt.

I was just pointing out that the basic 1911 design is not inherently safer than the more modern striker designs when it comes to drop-safety.

But ya, in reality, it's not going to happen on a properly maintained gun made since 1980.

As somebody who has a degree in Criminology (that is, study of crime, not Criminal Justice which is more about laws) I can tell you that deterrence is just a theory, in practice it doesn't really hold up.

From personal experience, I can attest looking down the muzzle of a 1911 pistol will make a person:

a - Immediately discontinue approaching the holder of the 1911 with intent to do him harm with a beer bottle.

    b - wet his pants

c - run like hell when given that chance or be shot.

    True story.

Man after reading all these I thought it was overkill carrying a full size 1911, guess I'm not the only one

Little bit different than someone, possibly likely armed, that has broken into your home or is intent on robbing you or raping your wife when you get out of the theater.

I carried with one chambered when i used to carry my 1911. I would not do this with a gun that has no safety and can not be uncocked. I looked at it this way. You're carrying a gun mainly your safety. This does not justify putting other's safety at risk with what ifs, so you must address these. Kids, animals, and other objects being able to nd a gun is big concern so i chose a gun that could be uncocked. As for speed i am as fast as anyone else at going from holster to firing (not a quick draw challenge).

Coincidentally enough, the incident I referenced happened when I was exiting a theater with my then girlfriend. So, not that different at all...

Unless you have decocker lever, manually decocking is a poor decision. It sets you up for a negligent discharge, still requires fine motor skills to cock, and costs you time(even if you do it on the draw).

Carrying the largest round you are comfortable carrying has always been a good idea.

I keep my mossberg500 right by my bed. I don't agree with racking it to be a deterrent. All racking it does is say "here I am in the house and I have a gun". Which a person doing an home invasion most likely already has a gun.

I prefer the element of surprise vs allowing my attacker to know what I've got and where I am at.

if someone was to break into my house, i feel like it's a good idea to give a verbal warning before you shoot someone. (like racking a slide, or yelling you actually have a gun) if someone knows you have a gun, anything you have in your house is not worth their life. if they know you're armed, continue, and then you kill them, i'd say you're shooting is 99.9 justified vs. you sneaking up on someone and shooting them in your home. i imagine the paperwork is pretty extensive with killing a man, so i feel that warning them first might be alittle easier, and save me from the dreaded writers cramp.
