My tacoma is a 2019. Bought it new and have only had one issue where it runs rough and throws codes. Previously I thought it was bad gas at the station but yesterday I ran through the car wash w/o getting gas and had the same issue occur. My truck runs like garbage, check engine comes on and shows a 'lean' code. Something (not the intake) is getting wet. I don't understand why this doesn't happen driving in rain. I havnt crawled around and looked yet for the issue, but curious if anybody else has had an issue here? Solutions?
I've got about 200miles remaining under warranty..

Rain isn’t the same as high pressure water spraying up from the bottom. I’d get it in fully explain the issue while it’s running crappy and try to get it fixed under warranty. Chasing that kind of electrical issue could be pretty expensive. Older cars that could be a plug wire getting wet shorting, but on new stuff it’s all the more to diagnose since everything is so connected by computer.

Yea I get the rain vs pressure thing. I had it in once when this was going on but at that time I and the tech I talked to both suspected the gas. They ran codes, which is how I knew it to be a lean code, made sense to the potentiality of the gas issue. Went to the gas station and filled up (had only filled to roughly 1/2 on the 'bad gas'). The issue immediately went away. I now suspect coincidental timing on that occurrence, as the wetness would have had time to dry out at that point.
This time though the only variable was the car wash. I just looked it over visually and I see nothing obvious. Fuse/relay boxes and intake are all bone dry.
Dealer ship is my first call in the morning for sure. I am skeptical they will find anything, if it requires pressure to create the issue and not just rain, its gotta be a tiny split/crack/gap they would be looking for. (I would think) I'll be pushing for a new engine harness if that is the case.

Wish you the best of luck, but seriously doubt that is going to happen.

Yes I had the recall done.
I doubt they will want to do the harness as well.

Why can't it be the wide open K & N Blackhawk intake you have?

I don't know that id call it 'wide open' it is contained within a box still. I just went through the wash again to see what was wet when i came out the other side. There were some sprinkles in the intake box but id hardly call it wet. There is still visible dust around the intake that clearly was not made wet. I have had other vehicles with more aggresive more open intakes that never had that happen. I would think it would happen in the rain also if the intake were involved. Not saying it couldnt be but i feel like it is not likely. The front half of the engine was dripping wet and there are a couple of connections that are soaked on a couple of sensors(?) .
Don't recall the code numbers but they were bank 1 lean, bank 2 lean.

could it be a tiny hole in one of the hoses, causing a vacuum leak?

It's the filter.. I'm am idiot guys.. took it over to the shop to blow off the dust and that made it very evident. Mist came shooting out of it and the inside filled with soap foam. It honestly felt basically dry. I had considered that could be the issue but I never even experienced that on my talon and that has a legit hole through the hood over the intake, so I dismissed it as an option. Go ahead call me a noob.
    Self induced issue.

I’d just be happy AF it’s something that simple. Chasing that kind of issue would be a freaking nightmare unless you had a really smart and methodical tech trying to figure it out, and it would probably take some time.

Don’t think I’d want a mod that caused issues with water spray though. I don’t go bombing through puddles / mud bogs but still.

If the condition does present itself again, you might need to clean your MAF. Maybe not though as that sucker should be clean as a whistle now lol. Glad you found the problem, and, more importantly, reported back the conclusion.

With the filter dried and re installed the check engine was still on. Cleaned the MAF, and now it's clear of codes and running perfect.
