Ok this is why I asked. Flux core is "supposed" to be pulled just like you're welding with a rod. This lets the slag form properly. You push gas shielded "mig" welding because as the puddle forms the gas clears the impurities and shields the arc. I guess as long as you get it to work for you that's all that matters but I've tried it both ways and pulling worked much better.

Best part about those classes was the metal fab class I had. I made my own smoker.
Those classes also helped me to get my current job. I don't do any welding, but it showed that I was willing to go back to school at my age

I will try that, it should help. Because I am not always happy with the results.

Get you a nice little mig to go with it. A Hobart 190 or Miller 211 or a Lincoln 180. Always try to go bigger. A bigger machine can be turned down to weld thinner stuff but smaller can't go up to weld thick stuff.

Anybody got a low-down on this outfit? They offer a basic MIG welding class (2 eight-hour sessions) for the not-bad price of $375. And it is close enough to me to be do-able.

I've never heard of them but that doesn't mean much. Check around F'burg and see if Mary wash or any of the schools have night classes. I know Northern Va Comm. College does out of Manassas so i imagine others do as well

    CMC:
Rainy day so decided to play with the welder some. I picked up some steel yesterday and since I was home alone today I went at it. I didn't need a CMC but said what the hell and did it anyway and if I was going to do it I may as well do it all. I don't buy premade plates or anything i just get some 3/16 plate and fab my own as i go. I've done the welding part of several of these but never the whole process so I had a bit of figuring to do. After some inspiration, I decided to cut, cut, and cut some more and ended up with more cut off than usual but figured why not push it on my own truck? As I went I figured out a couple of different approaches to the plates also.
I just piddle with my own stuff anymore. I do enough fab work at work. Not everybody may like my approach to this and that's fine to each their own. I had fun playing with the welder and getting to put it in different positions and see how it worked. I deffinately had to turn the speed up a little for the overhead parts, which was expected, but i think it all came out well

    Stock:

Chopped all the way back to the frame and the outer corner tucked and rounded

I got bold and cut even more on the passenger side although it probably doesn't show

Just catching up on your thread - didn't know you hunt! What great heads... My first is hanging in the shop over the lathe. I worry about him getting dirty. Ha. He'll move to my office soon. Anyway - my shoulder has not been tolerating drawing the bow so after a few months rest i'm trying to slowly get back into it. Glad to see your robin hood. It's the only time you're happy to trash a $10 arrow, right?!
