If they keep coming and refuse to back down I go to Plan C which ramps up the lethality all the way to a slug. See above post for Plan A.
Edit: Trust me if they don't back down from getting hit with the bean bag from less than 10 yards they are hopped up on something and will require lethal force to be stopped. I got hit with one from about 30 yards and I would start running away if I was on the other side of one. Adrenaline may take away some of its effects though.

The Glaser slug is a hollowpoint with a polymer ball (not ceramic) in it. The mass is provided by a compressed core of #6 or #12 (not 12 Ga) shot. That's tiny shot - #6 is usually used for doves. #12 is basically rat shot. I do not at all trust the Glaser design to penetrate properly, or to do much damage to anyone clothed or with any bones in them.

ive only got 1 dog, but i live in a gated community, keep my doors and windows locked...

I park my patrol car out front...if someone comes past all of those then I can only assume that they are there to do me harm and the bottom line is that I WILL NOT BE A VICTIM

My apartment is kept dark for a reason...no night lights etc and i can move effortlessly thru my entire apt without ever turning on a light

i dont see anything wrong with using a rifle its way more powerful than a handgun i just hope everyone hits the deck

imho not so much...if youre shooting at them you better be justified in pointing a gun at them and not to shoot a bean bag...youre not doing crowd control at a prison...

5.56 fragments alot more than a fmj 45acp, why do you think almost all of the swat teams use SBR'd AR15's?

maybe someone already said this i didn't read thru the whole thread

with the right loads a rifle (short one) is perfect for HD

...my response to the back-n-forth on which projectiles penetrate walls, badguys, etc. .better,... keep in mind it's very complex - 100% physics, and bullets can react in strange ways depending on the combination of speed, weight, shape, tip design, impact angle/geometry, impact medium thickness, impact medium physical properties, ...etc, etc...
in a nutshell, the terminal performance envelope for any given "round" can be extremely widespread..

for example, ... .223/5.56mm FMJ is horrible at penetrating multiple layers of drywall (it destabilizes, tumbles, breaks up), ...slower and heavier bullets and buckshot tend to do much better here.. yet .223/5.56mm FMJ can typically be expected to perform much better against body armor, metal, etc than pistol/shotgun..

be sure to visit our friend Old Painless's site, where he puts all of these to the test - find out for yourself http://www.theboxotruth.com/ :)

Do NOT use a rifle for HD unless thats all you have. It will go through a wall and not to mention you will be deaf after! I would go to a gun range the rents guns with your wife and see what she likes to shoot and come to and agreement after ya'll both handle and shoot them. I would not get a 40s&w. It has a sharp recoil where a 9mm or 45acp tends to roll. I would look at a...
    1st) S&W 642- 38 special
    2nd) Bersa 380- .380
    3rd) Glock 19- 9mm
Also dont get a laser, get a nice flash light. You will want to see who you are shooting just incase she heard something go bump in the night and it turns out it was you getting a midnight snack.

For shotguns i would look at either a 20 or 12 guage pump. Again see what she is comfortable with and get low recoil ammo.

If she has never shot guns start her off with a 22lr at the range. Also call the range and see when they have to most down time so you will less likely wont habe a guy shooting a hand cannon in the stall next to her and scare her into not shooting.

I'm sure you heard this before but once you pull the trigger there is no going back, so make sure you dont point a gun at anything you dont want to kill or destroy. You are also responsible for the bullet after it leaves your gun so if you shoot someone and you miss or it goes through someone and hits your neighbor or guy waling down the street you wiill find yourself in a world of trouble. Keep the gun loaded ready to go. You dont want to "rack it" to scare the bad guy off. IT DOES NOT WORK!!! If it did the cops would do it all the time. If I heard someone rack a shotgun I would ust start shooting in the direction I heard it. When seconds count you dont want to have to cock or chamber a round.

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
    OK...last swipe at this....
Assume every projectile you fire is going to penetrate at least one wall with enough energy to injure whoever is on the other side. Arguing that 556 is more likely to penetrate is stupid. THEY ALL PENETRATE!
Jeff Cooper once said 'I use a pistol to fight my way to a rifle'....not sure it really applies here, but some people think he spoke the gospel.
In home defense, the goal is not to kill a perp, it's to defend and evacuate from the situation. If the perp dies, so be it.
Bird shot, #6, will cause one hell of a wound and, again, killing is not the objective here, disabling the enemies ability to make war is.
A 1911 with a 10 round mag of quality hollowpoints and night sights (not lasers!) combined with a tactical light is a pretty powerful combo.
Lights can be used to blind and disorient the perp, and are effective tactical tools.
Finally training and planning have to be considered....I have considered this very scenario and discussed it with my wife. Her job is to grab a phone, next, get to our son, and lock the two of them in the upstairs bathroom, crouched in the bathtub (cast iron may shield them from shit flying, may not) and dial 911. My job is to identify the threat and try to neutralize and draw harm AWAY from them.
I have considered where and how I would attempt to identify positions and shooting lanes which reduce the chance of me hitting someone I don't want hit, and if I draw fire, reduce the chance of drawing that fire in the direction of the people I'm trying to defend.
I do have loaded handguns located in different areas, all are in locking safes except my CC, I'm not a one and done or hung out because of my location.
Please do not pick this apart and contradict my ideas, because you will not change my mind.
    Done with this thread.

    None but soon......
    I use tomahawks......

haha seriously though you could just look into getting a suppressor on whatever option you choose. That should help with muzzle flash and noise. I figure if you have to use it your adrenaline will be so high you won't even notice how loud it is. Don't know from experience though. Good luck.
