You might be confusing correlation with relationship.

It's all I used in tundra for 19 years with over 300k miles today. I use to do 15k mile oil changes with mobil1. If mobil1 is a marketing ploy...it's a very good one. Amsoil and Castrol are very good also, but why pay more to get the same results.

In the snowmobile field we refer to it as scamsoil.

Why? It’s just overrated? I never used amsoil heard great things about it but I can’t justify the price over Castrol edge.

It's more of a marketing thing the way their dealers are set up with amsoil as most of their lubricants are pretty good...some excellent. Only iffy one I can recall is their interceptor 2 stroke motor oil....more then likely where they got a bad rap.

I did 10,000 mile changes on my first gen from new, it developed a valve cover gasket leak at about 220,000. Looked fine when the gaskets were replaced.

I bought a few dozen cases of this stuff back in the 90s and use it every other oil change. I'm willing to part with some of it, but no low ball offers. I know what I got.

It seemed like a lot of people who used that started the story with "I overheated my engine real bad or I ran my engine out of oil...
...so I put Slick 50 in it."

I prefer to differ with the manufacturer recommendation on coolant changes, it is the only thing protecting the head gaskets.

The occasional coolant change is way cheaper than a head gasket.

On the Tacoma it is super easy to change too. A piece of 5/16" hose, 10MM socket and a long extension are all that is needed.

Agreed. There are marketing strategies involved in selling vehicles, as previously mentioned. They are based on optimum conditions that I do not live in. Coolant replacement is eazy peazy, like oil and airfilters. I do my transmission every 50,000, not quite as easy, but a lot of info out there on getting it done.

I'm a fan of Castrol full synthetic. I run the Edge euro spec in my wife's bmw since it is one of the few that is LL-01 approved and is reasonably priced, and I use the Power1 in my motorcycles. No issues to date.

I remember the good old days of Slick 50. I also remember when Quaker State Oil Co. decided to add paraffin to their blend... to make it more 'slippery'. Needless to say, it created thick layers of wax inside valve covers....

Only thing slick about it, was how many people that bought into it.

I remember going into an chain auto parts store and everyone was wearing a "Ask me about Slick 50" button.

Being the :stirthepot: I am I asked this twerp kid.
He commenced to tell me "it had lowered his oil temperature 50 degrees due to the reduced friction".
The kid had an early 80's Thunderbird, they didn't even have a coolant temperature gauge, so I asked the kid how he knew.
 His reply: "Well, well, I ahh, I just know..." :smack:
