I lay the cat on his back on my lap, gently squeeze his foot to extend the claws and clip away. Quick belly rub between each foot and a treat to follow it up.

If the animal is a regular patient, my vet clips for free.

Same people paying $800 for the same animal people are dropping off in boxes in public places.

And based off my very limited experience, if it was socially acceptable to remove claws still, I would.

Normally I'd agree...but dude you should see how my wife's cat reacts to nail trimming, or even being held/contained for that matter. He's seriously a lethal weapon when that happens. I could understand paying to get his done, but for most cats yeah I think it's kind of ridiculous.

It's bad to declaw a cat. It's like cutting off their fingers, it's a horrible practice.

We have a rescue, Domino, who had his claws removed before we got him (over a decade ago now). He's still in constant pain, you can see it when he walks.

Don't use human toe nail clippers for cat claws. The way they cut, it crushed the nail before it actually cuts. If the clippers aren't sharp or the cat squirms a bit mid-cut, you could actually hurt them. Pet Specific clippers aren't that expensive. I've had good luck with the slider type, but it's hard to know how good they are until you actually use them. Example, but not a pair I actually own:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CPPTW5M/ref=twister_B01AV36I1K?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I recently bought this pair of the shear type clippers, but haven't actually used them yet.:

I believe that! We only do it because that's what the vet used-but clearly it does tend to munch a couple of his nails. And they have the nerve to up the cost using human clippers.
Far as de-clawing a cat, I feel it's an awful act upon a cat to take away the one thing his little brain is hardwired to: his tools and if need be, his weapons. What ya think his chances are, after you had this done to him, if he gets away from you outside and you lose him? Without claws he's good as dead. Cruel practice for sure:(

I've got a black and white tuxedo named Harley...coolest cat I've ever known, he's pretty much a dog. And he loves hanging out in the bathtub for some weird reason.

Only because there is no “for declaw” here...my 15 year I mentioned NEVER seemed in pain coming home from vet after surgery. No issues with litter box. Has always had great agility. Floor to counter. Couch to couch leaps 4-5 feet apart. Uses a wicker pot to “scratch” everyday. Sweetest cat ever. 100% healthy since Day One. As responsible pet owners, she’s NEVER been outside. I strongly believe this animal has had a fantastic life and would not have been any happier with 4 paws with claws. Just 2 years ago we put down a 17 year old cat with all the same descriptions. No claws. I get the propaganda that it’s cruel and have fallen in line with our new 1 year old cat. Only compromise now is keeping an eye on the young cat with claws and the old
cat without. They’ve never got into it thankfully. I just really think that maybe it’s overblown. I’d like to see a study of lots of real world owners’ experiences and not just the “experts” that show up on the web. I See a few comments here about some grumpy cats. That just hasn’t been my experience at all.

Same here-I was never much on cats but our little guy is cool like yours. Follows me all over like a dog. He's become my little buddy!
This is my favorite pic of him as it pretty much sums up his personality-he can be a goofy little shit:D

When they get too pointy they snag on stuff and he actually gets caught on his scratcher.

I like to keep the holes in my leather sofa to a minimum and when they are long and he runs it sounds like velcro.

I don't really think it's humane to clip my cats claws, they're his weapons.

We have holes in our sofa cushions, bed blankets and comforters, etc. just from when they walk across them when their claws get real sharp. Plus they occasionally will scratch things they're not supposed to and with sharp claws that's all but guaranteed to ruin whatever it is.

Our cats are strictly indoor cats so there's no harm in keeping their weapons trimmed...if anything it's better for their safety when they occasionally fight one another.

Just to re-emphasize, I'm talking trimming not de-clawing...should never do that to any cat.

My cat is also an indoor cat, and even though he basically destroys every single one of my stretchy shirts, I still wouldn't clip his claws.
