The Magnuson def helps when towing. I'm on stock gears with 33's and a blower, it was a nice change. The Magnuson really helps on hills and allows us to run in S5 of the flats. It has just enough added torque down low that it'll stay in S5 until you hit an incline. Seems to get better mpg sitting in 5th than wound up in 4th. I haven't ordered gears yet as I flip flop on what I think would actually work best.

As to the coolers, that’s has been handled by the factory tow package though their might be better after market options.

Can’t be overweight if you don’t weigh it.

I was telling the wife last night that given the ease to go over weight in the taco, that many of the overlanders we see crawling around here in the desert with steel front and rear numbers, winches, roof and bed adds a and top tents, that they have to be close or overweight themselves.

Trailer....truck it dont matter it's the total of all sums that make up the max load, regarding the cooler issue ALL it was designed for is what's on the door sticker put on all the blowers, brakes, coolers, springs, yada yada the trans, axles, motor, steering were ONLY designed for so much that's it

Just because a 1 ton Cummins set to 'KILL' can pull 36,000 lbs dont mean it will live long doing it

    Same goes for tacos

No doubt. That’s said it’ll have to be for a year or two. On the plus side we only use it this way 3-4 times a year and our max travel is about 250 miles one way. So narrowing the weight issue shouldn’t be too hurtful.

One of my hunting friends was plowing his driveway at -30 below 3 winters ago & smoked his trans in less than 20 minutes from how fast the heat builds from tourqe converter slip (normal operating procedure) & if there is a way to lock the converter on a taco I don't know it BUT if you do find a way 5th & 6th gear both are overdrives that also build heat from gear multiplication I don't care if you do have 5:29's it still builds heat although not as fast as 3:90's (stock) with 33's or 35's

It's only a matter of time on a stock motor standing on the loud peddle if blown or turbo even quicker

    I understand.

I tow in fourth and monitor temps on my scan gauge. I also don't allow the tranny to hunt generating even more heat. And I’m not racing anyone keeping the mph at higher levels come hell or high water on a grade.

If I have a hill to climb while towing I manage the speed to keep the heat under control. I was going to pin the tranny thermostat before this trip but I forgot.

I’ve got 25k miles on the truck, in the next few weeks it goes in for an oil change and I’m going to have them do the tranny fluid ahead of schedule. Might also have them throw a 170 thermostat in place of the 190 from the factory.

Both can't hurt I'd be cautious with the thermostat change due to the ECM might throw a check engine code from not getting up to what it thinks is normal operating temp & possibly over fueling thinking the engine is still cold.

For what it’s worth , I have mine pinned open during my tow season. Based on my pinned open temps, putting in a 170 tstat would seem to produce the same results. Also, the lower temps do not appear to bother the ECU. And, your dealer might not be a fan of either pinning or a lower opening temp tstat. I’d try pinning first.

All I know is you guys have brains so just be safe I've seen many tacos loaded with so much shit 5 feet off the ground ie tents, water cans, jacks, spare tires, you get the idea. There's no way all that lard that high & possibly over weight it HAS to handle like a shopping cart full of bowling balls in the corners let alone stopping all that shit.

Add steel bumpers with winches, fox 2.5's, rock sliders, a shitload of lighting, it would be perfect

Oh yea question why it gets 4mpg
