I keep my pet crocodile chained under my truck when parked.

    I feed him very sparingly.........

We took turns driving through the lot at random times for a while, but everyone got tired of that after a few weeks. Then the cats went missing again.

Now the vans just go home with the employees who use them. Problem solved….

Can you please provide the contact of your local muffler shop and the cost? I'm interested in having the whole pipe welded like that. Thanks!

I went to the Orangevale shop on Greenback Lane. It's been nearly 10 years since they did my Tacoma, I think it was around $150 at the time. Took them about 1/2 hour.
This is the same shop that had new OEM mufflers in stock for my 1995 Corvette... maybe I just got lucky with those.

More details on this please... Did you weld the wings on? Did you rivet them? Bolt? Have any more pictures?

I may just find someone local with the RCI mid-skid and do a quick 3d capture and then put it into CAD to add wings and have a machine shop throw a piece of 1/8" 6061 in the press brake to make a one-piece one.

I heard on the news yesterday the police will etch your license plate number on the cats for you to deter theft. I suppose it might help if they don’t use a grinder to remove the numbers.

They’re bolted to the skid. Rivets wouldn’t work very well on 1/4” aluminum since theyre meant for thinner material.
No real details, I just mocked up some cardboard and kept trimming until I got the coverage I wanted and transferred that to a sheet of 3/16 aluminum then bent in a finger press. I don’t think I measured anything to make them.

I've seen where folks have used a MIG to write the VIN on the cat as well. I've thought about doing that but haven't gotten around to it. Etching would be pretty simple but you'd want it deep enough to be hard to remove; make a stencil then use a 9V battery and salt water (you can watch a youtube video on home etching).

Wrap 'em with asbestos, then use muffler clamps to hold it in place.

Might not stop the theft, but they'll certainly pay for it in the future.

I finally wrapped mine with 1/4” stainless cable and use muffler clamps to hold it in place. It will be harder to cut through with the cables in the way. Engraving it is to easy to grind off, and the buyer wouldnt care if its been ground off if their sleasy enough to buy it anyways

This hasn’t been a problem where I live.
I have been more worried about the tailgate disappearing.

But this rare metal shortage is going to be an issue. I can see the cost going crazy in the future.

My daughter asked me to build something for her because she lives in an area where these things are getting stolen. I ended up building this obvious looking cage.

It is certainly not saw-proof but it was made to be obvious. When somebody looks underneath her car they will see this and decide to just go elsewhere.

She has a unit body car & the sheet-metal is very thin, so you could build something heavy and strong and rip it off the car with a crowbar easily.

I’m going to rivet it in eight places to the frame & floor.

Where I live, one of the new car dealerships decided to buy a bunch of blue car ramps and display the trucks on them. This is a lot that is well lit up all night long and right next to a busy, 45mph 4 lane that is only 2 miles from the State Highway Patrol barracks. Thieves came in and got a bunch of the brand new cats, had easy access and good lighting to work in during the "after hours." It would have taken a crazy thief to think that they wouldn't be seen doing this, but they did it. I am curious as to how they could sell new, sawzall cut cats, but...
