Catalytic converter keep going out

    Its real hard to tell if I'm burning oil. The valve covers were leaking pretty bad. replaced them a couple thousand miles ago.

    ^Burning 1 qt every 5000 miles would not cat damage so quickly. Burning 1 qt every 1000 miles (threshold for most mfr's "defect" definition) would be a different story... But yeah, the PCV valve should be replaced every 5 years / 60k or so.

    It is possible. Something could be causing the ECM to detect a lean condition and inject more fuel to compensate, but not enough to trip the check engine light. Only way to know is to plug in a scan tool to look at the O2 sensors' outputs and fuel trims.

    I'm betting if the plugs haven't been changed in who knows how long, the MAF and IAC haven't cleaned been either.

    Plugs and cleaning sensors is where I will start. Front brake pads also.

    If your plug wires are old, consider replacing those also.
