i know a lot of catalytic converters get stolen off of our beloved tacomas of all gens but has anyone heard of any 3rd gen cats being stolen? If so any recommendations on any protection devices/services to prevent these thefts reoccurring ?

Take a look at your Catalytic, once you find it ask yourself that question again.

One of the 3rd gen changes over the 2nd gen is they moved the cat's closer to the engine block making it difficult to access.

Really people steal catalytic converters??? Why? Hell, if they did steal them, they'd be doing you a favor... Much better flow without.

Also, which set are they stealing front or back pair? I had my rear set of cats removed when installing URD y-pipe, much better now.

According to Toyota the specifically located the cats to make them very difficult to steal. I don't believe you need to do any more theft protection if you take a look.
As for removing them, completely agree they reduce flow, but good luck getting passed inspection (depending on state).

Hugh... Learn something new everyday... Just not a issue where I live I guess, never even heard of that. Seems like a lot of work for little payoff??? I mean you're either doing a lot of cutting or un-bolting.

All the junkies and thieves steal cooper around hear. Go around to brand new homes that aren't quite finished yet and strip them clean.

Can still pass inspection with rear cats removed, and keeping front cats. Not sure about a visual inspection in California or whatever they do there, but we have a emissions inspection here in Houston area, and passes without rear set of cats.
