I am asking advice about CC protection for my 2022 TRD Tacoma. The dealer’s parts manager said that currently Toyota did not have anything. I see the cat security panel on line. Should I purchase one?

Never a bad idea for protection. Better safe than to deal with that mess then end up buying one after anyway

Depends on where you live, where you typically park (on-street vs. your own garage), where you work (does it have secure company parking?), and what your risk tolerance is.

I happen to live in an urban area with a huge cat theft problem, I park my truck in my garage, I'm retired but I do road trips that occasionally involve me parking my truck in airport lots that could be subject to the tender mercies of a cat thief, and I have disposable income.

To me spending $400 (https://www.talonsgarage.com/product-page/3rd-gen-toyota-tacoma) to not have to worry about dealing with PIA of a stolen cat(s) is worth it. YMMV...

I thought one of those cat shield outfits was advertising as "Toyota-approved"?

    Oh look, another mod....
After reading all the stories about stolen CC's on this site and on the local news I decided to get one. It's being installed tomorrow morning. The Dallas/Ft Worth Metroplex has seen a surge in CC thefts. The area that I live in Arlington, Texas had 8 thefts in 2019. 253 thefts in 2020. 613 thefts in 2021 (they did not include the months of Nov or Dec).

I hope it's going to be like insurance that I never use. But it will give me peace of mind. I also know that NOTHING is 100% theft proof. This will just slow the thief down or deter them from even trying. The odds of it happening to me get greater every single day.

    I bought this one: https://getcatsecurity.com/purchase...cat-security-toyota-tacoma-2016-2021-4wd-qv3z

I just witnessed one being stolen/cut out on a honda cr-v. Took him all of 2 to 3 minutes. Once I heard the sawzall, I went to confront the perp. He then jumped in his truck and tried to run me over.

I thought this was one of those things that are posted on forums, but most never experience or see in person. After seeing a poor woman get on a car and fire it up just to find out the cat had been cut off, I went home and ordered one of these plates to protect mine. I felt terrible for her, because she didn’t know why the car was so loud until I told her and got under the car to take a picture. Turns out the car was a rental that she got for the weekend after flying all the way from Japan to Florida to watch her daughter participate at an event and that event was starting in 20mins from the time we found out thieves took the cat off. Made me sick to see her scrambling trying to figure out what to do. I was on my motorcycle, so didn’t offer a ride, but she was able to get an Uber. I hope she didn’t miss the daughters event.

I've been reading about these cat shields for a long, long time. I'm on the fence about getting one.

I have been contemplating a replacement URD Y pipe instead. Does this Y pipe replace the secondary cats in their entirety? It has bungs for the O2 sensors, and you can save the secondary cats for reinstall later if you see the truck or state emission goons say something. I don't even think that installing the Y pipe would have an effect with ECM trouble codes or drivability?

Not sure if the Y-Pipe deletes the rear cats or not, but I have the Spec-U exhaust which deletes the rear cats and have had no CEL's

If you are planning on getting skid plates I am sure a number of the vendors will start adding the protection as an add on to existing skids or as part of a new one. I just put the full RCI skids on my OR that included their version of cat protection. A number of different threads going around but figured I would post in this one as well as an FYI.

I'm on Nextdoor a lot, I see posts just about every week of cc thefts in the area. I'm sure the overwhelming majority of thefts don't even get posted on Nextdoor.

I've experienced zero house fires yet still keep a fire extinguisher handy.

I'm a police officer in a medium sized city and the number of cat thefts we take definitely makes me leery about parking any high profile vehicle for any length of time. It's not the costs associated with the replacement but the hassle of it. My time is worth more than a few hundred bucks to make the thief move on to their next target.

+1 for Cat Security. Took me an hour and 10 minutes from start to done in my driveway.
