I wholeheartedly concur with Billy. If you know it will probably fail, why not have it replaced for FREE. Apparently they admit to a bad design & are rectifying it.

As Peter posted go to: http://www.toyota.com/recall
Punch in your VIN & it will tell you about the "special service campaign"
If not & you have not received a notice, then you're not on the list.
There is NO mention of an inspection in the notice. They WILL replace because they KNOW it's faulty. However, if the defective part affected adjacent parts they will be inspected & replaced as needed.

Very true, why not get it replaced for FREE. The parts alone (CAT/Exhaust pipe) is between $900 -$1400

I would suggest you call another dealership if they are giving you a hard time about replacing them. I've known my service guy for years now so when I called him yesterday about this, he said bring it over so he can order the parts and get them replaced under warranty. I was even hesitant since my truck has been running very well after that CAT was replaced 3 months ago.

How many have had the work completed already?

I got a call from my dealer the other day and let it go to voicemail. I thought they were calling to let me know of this issue with catalytic converters..

Instead it was some young girl trying to schedule me a time to come in and buy a 2016. Never once did she ask me to test drive, just "come in and buy."

I'll update as soon as my parts come in. looks like they are on special order. Advisor told me he'd be surprised if they came in by this Friday. When I got mine replaced 3 months ago, I looked exactly like the pictures posted here on page 4. Has that titanium looking finish. And truck has been running great ever since.

I don't recall when mine was replaced.. I believe it was at 12k miles. At that time it took about a week to get the new parts into the dealer.

One of these days when I have the time to take it in I'll give mine a call.

I had it done last week. Waited until I had notice in hand. Toshie (Japanese) my former boss, said they have had a few come in that would not even run 'cuz of the blockage in the converter. He was mumbling about different suppliers as he walked away to replace mine. Main thing, get it replaced if you got the notice. Potentially could leave you stranded.

I thought the issue with the converters was the honeycomb disintegrating? That was the issue with my original cat, anyway.

yea I was surprised too when I started hearing my CAT rattling. At first I thought it was just my normal OCD noticing everything and anything. Then I thought maybe it was just a rock that got stock between the headshield and that CAT. Mine only had about 29k miles when it started falling apart inside.

True & if it disintergrates in a certain way, it can clog like a drain.:)

Toyota sent me my recall notice week before Thanksgiving. Took it in yesterday and they replaced exhaust pipe where catalytic converter located. No charge. I never noticed a problem, or is truck running any different than before. 40,000 miles on my 2012 Tacoma SR5 4wd 4 cylinder. Was in an out of service department within 1 hour.

That statement is incorrect as per Toyota Corporate. I called them after my dealer told me the same thing. I filed a complaint with Corporate and the dealer called me the next day and said it was a misunderstanding and that my parts are on order.

I would not be surprised if they are just waiting for a couple months to reduce the parts demand....

Had mine done last week. All good. Only thing I noticed was the "new cat" smell for a couple of days.

It's been a week since they performed the service campaign, approximately 500 miles. For the most part it doesn't feel all that different except in low load/rpm situations. Can't quite put my finger on it, but there is a slight change, possibly more smoother/efficient? I also don't experience as much clutch chatter.

I used to have this squeak/chirping noise that would occur once the engine has warmed up, but that is now completely gone. The only questionable noise I have left is this rattle that happens around 2,000 rpm under load. I wonder... If the internals of the catalytic converter start falling apart, not only could it clog the cat, but could it also fall into the muffler as well and cause a rattle, or worse, a clog?

I wouldn't worry Peter, any crap from the converter will just reside in the resonator chamber of the muffler. Not interfering with air (exhaust) flow. Think of a suppressor on a gun. But, you do have a point!

When I installed an AFE catback a few weeks ago the stealership quoted me the same $27.21 for the exhaust flange gasket. What a ripoff! Got it at Autozone for $3. While at the dealer to buy the nuts and bolts I had them bring out the gasket so I could see it to compare to Autozone's. Exact same one.

I have the problem on my 2013 DC with ~80K on it. Went in with the service letter, had a slight rattle at the time. Waited 3wks for dealer to get the part (finally scheduled for Monday). In that time rattle went from being slight, but persistent - to now, very pronounced. Accelerating at highway speeds nearly impossible w/out downshifting, and when that happens the rattle gets VERY loud. Severe loss of power on my way home last night, so def clogged now I think. Parked at dealer until Monday.

I thought it was a straight replacement not an inspection and if bad replace. See earlier in the thread for a discussion on this.
