I have a 2013 AT OR with 106k miles that recently started producing a rattling sound accelerating around 2nd gear. Long story short my local shop discovered the sound is coming from within the cat and will ultimately need to be replaced. They brought to my attention a Special Service Campaign (see attached) that covered the cost of replacing the cat for 2010 - 2014 Tacomas, but unfortunately this only covers the 2.7 L engines.

I already called one dealership and they told me I'm not covered. I looked my VIN up as well on the Toyota site and could see there are no recalls or service campaigns for my VIN. However my shop is insistent that I call around and try get them to cover it, because it's possible that the issue also exists with the V6.

My question is, has anyone had this cat issue with a V6? Did you have any luck with the dealerships? Right now I'm looking at over 2k to get it replaced (with OEM cat) and would obviously like to avoid that.

    Thanks

if it was a real recall, usually emission components are covered for 10yrs or more & dependent on mileage. your local Toyo dealer should be able to see that. I don't see any time frame or mileage limitations on this notice which seems very out of place and sketchy.

Call Toyota NA headquarters and confirm with your VIN if there is any kind of recall or free replacement.

Thanks. Yea I think I'm going to have to contact corporate directly. I think I'm screwed on the factory emissions warranty tho because I'm pretty sure that only covers up to 80k miles.

1000% its not covered. It's 2.7 only. No V6 has extended catalytic converter warranty.

Usually its just rusty heat shields on the cats that cause the rattles.

Converters coming apart internally can happen on any vehicle, sometimes there are contributing factors such as misfires, fuel control issues, or physical damage other times it just happens.
The service campaign only applied to the 2.7L engine, to my knowledge there have been no such campaigns/extended warranties for the converters on the 4.0L engine and your out of the federal emissions warranty so I seriously doubt they will do anything for you but it's worth a shot I suppose.
