Catalytic converter theft

I didn’t realize Tacomas were a top target of cat converter theft. Anyone tried any antitheft covers?

 

I have RCI has ones that attach to the transmission skid plate. Currently On sale ... may even be free with the transmission plate. Others run Miller Cat that do not need extra plates.

Remember that the guards only delay thieves ... usually enough to make them move on, But always possible they REALLY want your converters.

 

Thanks. A friend of mine had the converters stolen off his Sequoia last year at a Dallas hotel. It took several weeks before his dealership could get new ones due to back order.

Yeah ... you have options. Given how easy it is for even our "more mature" members to slide under their trucks without ramps, skinny meth-heads have no issue.

Got the same. They are stuffed under CBI skid plates. I defy a cat thief to try it before I catch them.

If you have not heard ... tailgate theft is common as well ... 20 seconds to unhook cable and lift out of the gate. @christian06 sells a deterrent and I bought one from SaBellCo.

If states would require a permit to buy/sell these things, complete with state issued photo ID, finger prints, accurate logs etc
AND
couple it with heavy fines ( say 1 year and $10,000 per count ) this would stop pretty quick. How difficult is that to do?

Here in the PRK, the catalytic thieves operate with impunity.
My daughters 2005 Prius was nearly totaled after they ripped of the very expensive cats.
These idiots tried to rip the cat off my 1991 Truck, which is worth maybe $5 on a good day.

We use Marco Muffler here, and they do a dandy job of welding cat cages around our cats.
These are heavy cages that cannot be easily cut by the typical snatch and grab artist.

I do long for the moment when I catch one under my vehicle, so I can let the jack down and go back to bed for another six hours.

 

While I agree, today we protect the shit-bums, so that's unfortunately not going to happen.

 

I just got around to putting mine on a couple days ago.

 

The cats aren’t being resold as cats. They are being broken down for the rare metals inside and those metals are sold on the black market as prices for those metals have gone up considerably.

 

i also have Miller. if i had to do it all over again i would go caliraised. price and does not interfere with greasing zerks on 4wd propeller universals. i have them (2018), you probably do not (2023)...but price (last time i checked).

 

My installer participated in a coordinated effort with law enforcement by engraving serial numbers on a big number of catalytics.
He said only one single serial showed up at a recycling yard, and that offending muffler shop owner was given a guest pass at the Graystone Hotel.
All the other swiped cats disappeared and were never seen again.. proof they are gutting them for the platinum, and not to resell old cats.

The cops know who the big cat thief is.
They jailed him for a short term, and the rape of Prius catalytics in Davis stopped.
When the thief got out of jail, the rape resumed.
