Dealer is asking for proof of warranty on my 2017. Getting code for bad catalytic converter not sure what I am supposed to show them as this should be covered by the Factory warranty as it is less than 8 years old and under 80000 miles

In your owners manual, should be a section stating the Federal Govt emissions warranty that is required by law.

Correct. Emissions system warranty is mandated by the Feds. The dealer knows this and is jerking you around.

What dealer is this? Since I live in Houston I will be sure never to visit them. You don't need to validate this and the dealer knows this.

Should be from in service date, so are they looking for the date you purchased it? I would think this would be in Toyotas system

Is there a possibility a 2017 was purchased in July of 2016 and is out of warranty? I don’t think so, but maybe?

so long as you are not over 80k, this is covered. They should validate it by running your VIN. You don't have to provide anything but your VIN and Mileage. Sounds like a lazy advisor.

get on the phone with them and tell them the purchase date and that emissions equipment is covered by 8yr 80k warranty
If they say no, ask them to send it in writing

The 2017 warranty & maintenance booklet is online for everyone to see: https://assets.sia.toyota.com/publications/en/omms-s/T-MMS-17Tacoma/pdf/T-MMS-17Tacoma.pdf

However, do make sure you have proof of spark plug replacement before 60k mi / 72mo. That is stated in the maintenance booklet as a requirement to keep the emissions warranty.

    Ohhhh. A legit 'gotcha'.

I bet less that 20% of the folks here are aware.

But maybe the dealer isn't either..... :D

You have a point, but you'd have misfire codes if the plugs caused the cats to go bad.

^The misfire counts have to accrue to a certain level before a code is set. It's debatable if intermittent misfires, not enough to set a permanent code, can slowly burn up the cats over time. In any case, the maintenance booklet clearly states proof of spark plug replacement is required to keep the emissions warranty. On paper this means if your ECM fails inside 8yr/80k and you didn't replace plugs on time, Toyota can deny warranty coverage on the ECM, if they choose to be a hardass about it.
