That's exactly what I do... live bait on the big pole, and cut baits on the smaller pole(s). Hopefully we can catch a small collection of bluegills before the sun sets. I'll also bring one of the crawdad traps to see if we can either catch some small bluegills in it or get some crawdads as bait, too.

The Bluegills have been plentyful for sure...easy ass hell to catch. This will be my 7th trip to Bartlett in 2 months lmao! The crwfish come up on shore in 1 foot or less of water at night and they'll be easy to catch too :)

Dude this is gonna be epic!!

Maybe I'll bring 2 crawdad traps so we have plenty to try. If they're out, they'll get in the traps and we'll have some bait options. I'm also bringing a frozen seafood mix that has shrimp, squid, cuttlefish and I think clams. Makes for a good bait with good protein scents and they stay on the hook well even with firm casts. I might swing by the grocery store and get some more squid though. Live bait, or sunfish cut in half, work great every time so that will be my primary. I'll bring my dink spinning rod with a tried and true bait/tactic for bluegills and a submersible bait holder bucket to keep the sunfish lively.

Have you guys ever loaded a treble hook up with chicken livers and then wrap that with stockings and tie it off with a bread tie? I usually do a bunch a couple days ahead of time and let them get nice and stinky by leaving them out the night before.

I have never done the stocking thing, but I do wrap a spring around my treble hooks to hold the bait.

    Kinda like this picture

yes, but instead of stockings i use raw bacon :D

The fat from the bacon is strong enough to give it a good hold

If you are using Bacon.. I am not responsible for your missing bait, nor the hook in my mouth.

Keep in mind that catfish are predators, but they are also protein finders. The big cats hit the live bait, and you're much more likely to catch small cats on stink baits. I highly recommend trying to get some bluegills and use those, even cut in half works pretty good. Stink baits are great, but you'll also have better success with minimal synthetics (ties, stockings, wire leaders, extra swivels, etc. only interfere with the catfish's sensitive taste receptors). Make it as natural as possible, and that's where the big ones come from.

Looking forward to fishing in this nice rainy weather! I'm not bringing the easy-up due to lightning, but I do have another pop-up duck blind shelter that can fit 2 chairs inside it. It folds up like one of those collapsible sun visors for your car, and I'm hoping it will keep us dry. I just hope we don't have to deal with heavy winds.
