Dad and I we into CB Radio a while back and we're trying to get back into is. I have a CB in my truck, nothing special and all temped in, cigarette plug and the antenna is just laying in the dash... not good and found out it's not transmitting awhile back. We think it is a bad antenna.

Been doing alot of research antennas, radiation patterns, gain; all very interesting which is just making me more excited to dive into it.

The question I have is about length. I see the lost common antenna is 1/4 wave 109", has anyone expermeted with longer wavelenghts?

I'm most interested in the 5/8, 21' and maybe 1/2, 18'. Having trouble finding 5/8 antennas, might end up being something I have to fassion myself. Any leads on this for a mobile setup?

Suggestions on mounts would be appreciated. I'm thinking mounted near the passenger rear bumper or near the front of the hood. I'm also planning on tieing it down when I don't need/want to have it up. It's also an aesthetic thing wanting it tied down like the whip antennas on military HUMMVs.

Looking for mounts, antennas preferably 5/8, and anything else y'all could point me to improve/start my setup.

I went with a Firestik antenna. Most CB antenna require a ground plane for effective " radiation". Hence, mounting on the roof or as you mentioned using a ditch light mount on the hood MIGHT be effective. Roof mounting is a pain if you park in a garage. You are forever having to remove the antenna. The Firestik antenna can be mounted most anywhere. The BEST place is using a bracket on top of the back bed of the truck. I was able to get the optimal SWR readings. If you mount it on the top of the bed near the cab, you typically will send out a weaker signal and have poor SWR.
