I was thinking of installing a Wilson Silver Load 3 ft antenna on the front left corner of the bed a few inch from the back of the cab.

Has anyone tried this and how does it work?

EatSleepTacos. Thanks for the link. I've seen a lot of builds but now I'm asking if anyone put an antenna in the location I mentioned and how it worked out.
Have you done that and how did it work out?

I don't know about your specific antenna, but I know people have mounted theirs there with success. however, those were 4 footers as I think a 3 would be too short to clear the roof. Someone I read had put a 3 there and communications with anyone in front of him was basically nonexistent.

I'm glad I didn't buy a 3ft yet. I had a 4ft in my hand and I put it back thinking it was longer than I needed. They didn't have a 3ft on the rack otherwise I would have bought it so, that worked out. I'll go back and buy the 4ft and I'm adding the spring at the base to lessen the chance of snapping off the Firestik.
    Thanks for the help.

I have a tonneau on the truck, so my options were pretty limited. Here's how I ended up mounting my 3 ft Firestik. It works pretty decently for what I need it to (relatively short range coms with a couple buddies and listening during interstate traffic jams when I'm curious as to what's going on).

    Looks good MD8 Taco.
I also have a tonneau cover on my truck. Yesterday I fabricated a 1/32" thk antenna bracket that sits on top of the bed rail and runs under the rail for the tonneau cover and bolts to the forward tie down rail in the bed. With this set-up the tonneau cover will open and close with no obstruction from the antenna or the bracket.

I just need to be sure I can ground the antenna.

Get a all metal(Wilson) or a all fiberglass(Frances). I have had great luck with these brands.

The firesticks get a couple of years on them and the wire on the outside breaks. You may not realize it until the radio has the finals burnt out.
